Job Description

Summary

At Monzo, our goal is to help our customers better manage their money. We are already recognized as one of the top providers of mobile banking in the UK where we have nearly 6 million customers, and now we’re expanding into the US market. We want our customers to trust Monzo with their finances – we care deeply about keeping their money and data safe, and meeting our regulatory and legal obligations. We’re looking for an exceptional person to manage the risks of our rapidly growing US product, with a specific focus on financial crime, fraud, and AML.

About Monzo

Monzo is the lead challenger bank in the UK. In the last few years, we’ve built a banking app that our customers love – with extremely high daily engagement and an industry leading net promoter score. We’ve raised over $1 billion from YCombinator, Stripe, Coatue, Eric Schmidt, Mike Moritz, and others - most recently at a $4.5bn valuation.

We’re just getting started in the US. We’re a small team operating like an early stage startup but with the financial, operational, and engineering platform muscle of a larger company. We’re focused on launching an amazing US product, shipping and iterating quickly, and finding product market fit. We’re looking for highly driven, enterprising people to help us achieve our mission to make money work for everyone .

At Monzo, we fight Financial Crime a little differently. Our financial crime experts work directly with software engineers, data scientists, and machine learning experts, helping us to spot, assess, and prevent crime quickly. We choose not to split out different areas of crime, either. Instead we tackle all Financial Crime together as one team. That includes AML, fraud, sanctions breaches, terrorist financing, bribery and corruption, and tax evasion.

The role

We’re looking for an exceptional person to support our financial crime and risk processes and help protect our small but rapidly growing US product. You will be responsible for all the processes and tools that we use to identify and mitigate financial crime and fraud risks. You’ll also have the opportunity to help us develop our strategy to prevent financial crime and help us build the team and processes to protect our customers' money.

You will have experience working on financial crime or fraud projects for other high-growth finance products, and are excited by the prospect of joining a small team and helping build something from scratch. You’ll report into the US team, but have a strong working relationship with the UK’s sizable Financial Crime team.

You'll be responsible for...

  • Managing the financial crime and fraud tools and processes that support Monzo in the US, with the goal of protecting our customers and reducing financial losses
  • Working closely with operations and customer support teams and serving as an escalation point whenever risks materialize
  • Proactively identifying emerging threats, through analysis of Monzo data and by maintaining an understanding of current industry-wide trends
  • Proposing and implementing improvements to our automated financial crime rules engine, including by working closely with our product, data, and engineering teams
  • Working closely with our banking partner (Sutton Bank) to satisfy their audit and reporting requirements
  • Ensuring that we remain compliant with relevant regulatory obligations, such as the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) and Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) rules
  • Reporting the performance of our work to prevent financial crime to stakeholders in the US and UK teams
  • You’ll be the point person for any questions/requirements that relate to financial crime and fraud. Of course, we won’t expect you to know all the answers so you’ll work closely with our experienced UK team as well as other advisors

You should apply if

  • You have 4+ years experience working on fraud and financial crime systems for high-growth consumer finance and FinTech products. You’re driven by protecting customers’ money and preventing financial crime
  • You’re keen to get directly involved and make things happen, without waiting for someone else or always needing to delegate, and are happy to work independently
  • You enjoy working efficiently in a fast-paced, high-volume environment and thrive when there’s ambiguity
  • You love working directly with product managers, engineers, and data scientists, and are excited by the prospect of harnessing technology to better control our risks
  • You’re comfortable working with data, using it to identify patterns and trends, and inform your decision making. (As a plus) you have data analysis skills using SQL or other data visualization tools
  • You're great at explaining complex concepts or technical or regulatory requirements to other members of the team, whether written or verbally

Logistics

  • This role can either be based in our downtown San Francisco office, or we support full remote work from anywhere in the US. If you are remote, we try to meet up quarterly for teamwork and socializing
  • The application process consists of an initial phone call with the hiring manager, followed by a practical written exercise and 2 or 3 video interviews. We promise not to ask you any brain teasers or trick questions.
  • We offer a competitive salary and a pretty great benefits package (if we do say so ourselves!)
  • Diversity and inclusion is a priority for us — if we want to solve problems for people around the world, our team has to represent our customers. So we need to attract the best talent and create an environment that supports and includes them. You can read more about diversity and inclusion on our blog .
  • At Monzo, we move fast, ship things every day, and develop products iteratively. But we are also very serious about the safety of our customers’ money and their trust in us, and we believe this starts with our internal culture. We default to transparency both internally and externally, and we involve our community in everything we do. We prize a diverse team as a strength: everyone is welcome at Monzo and is encouraged to do the best work of their lives.

Equal Opportunity Statement

At Monzo, embracing diversity in all of its forms and fostering an inclusive environment for all people to do the best work of their lives with us. This is integral to our mission of making money work for everyone.

We're an equal opportunity employer. All applicants will be considered for employment without attention to ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, family or parental status, national origin, veteran, neurodiversity status or disability status.
