REI is looking for a Software Engineer Intern to contribute to REI’s success by working as part of a cross-functional team and actively participate in day-to-day functions of Search team in the IT Digital department. Throughout the course of your internship experience, you will own and drive a challenging and relevant project to solve real-time business challenges. Under the supervision of your Manager, and as a key member of the Search team, you will gain insights into the key functions of your team as it relates to REI’s broader strategy and vision.

This is an exciting opportunity to join our Search team within Digital/IT. We are responsible for the search capabilities on REI.com and support and develop a number of platforms and applications to enable REI, our members, and our customers find relevant products and content for their outdoor needs. Duration:

• 10 - 12 weeks (mid June - September)

Job functions include:

• Develop application features that deliver exceptional experiences for our customers.
• Collaborate daily with software developers, designers, and product managers to build to design, develop, and deliver new web application components.
• Contribute to key features including new site enhancements, application development, mobile web development, coding for accessibility, search engine optimization, performance optimization, and pattern library development.
• Create and give a presentation to their business group at REI of the project they worked on over the course of their internship.
• Assists in gathering, analyzing and translating business and non-functional requirements into a solution design.
• Develop to specification and maintain application code in accordance with the current development methodologies and practices.
• Prepare required documentation for the portion of work assigned, with review

Qualifications and expectations:

• Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related disciplines
• Interest and passion for REI’s values, mission, and vision.
• Interest in professional software engineering practices & best practices for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations.
• Knowledge and proficiency with web application technologies like Java, Spring Boot, Maven, REST API’s, JUnit, and SQL.
• Actively participates and collaborates with others on one's own team and across REI for the achievement of business goals.
• Communicates effectively in both verbal and written means.
• Flexible in one's viewpoints and positions in order to support the direction taken by others at REI.
• Consolidates information from various sources including feedback from others to reach sound decisions.
• Works smart by setting effective work goals, establishing priorities, and planning well in order to produce quality work.
• Executes effectively by using resources efficiently, meeting deadlines, and keeping others informed of work plans and progress toward goals.
