Job Description

The Mozilla Foundation is a nonprofit public benefit organisation. Our mission is to ensure the Internet is a global public resource, open and accessible to all! Our work is guided by the Mozilla Manifesto and in 2020, we launched a multi-year investment strategy focused on advancing “Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence” globally. Our strategic plan on Trustworthy AI is described in greater detail here.

A key part of our strategy is to invest in the innovators at the frontlines of working to make the internet more open, inclusive, decentralised, and secure. Through fellowships and awards, we support these leaders and amplify their important work on issues impacting the health of the internet. A growing part of this work is the Responsible Computer Science Challenge, a global initiative focused on integrating ethics into computer science education. By helping to fuel a new wave of engineers, designers, and other technologists who consider ethics as a primary design constraint, the Responsible Computer Science Challenge is driving a culture shift in technology that will lead to more trustworthy AI and a healthier internet.

We are seeking a Program Associate to support our Fellowships and Awards (F&A) team. This new role will complement our current team and support the management of grantmaking and program cycles, including fellowships, awardees and our alumni community. A core focus of the role will be to support the expansion of the Responsible Computer Science Challenge alongside existing and new Fellowships and Awards programs.

The ideal candidate will have a passion for building a more open, secure, and inclusive internet, contributing to the development and execution of quality programs, and an interest in uplifting the work of others. You will work across the organisation to connect our work internally, and with external movement partners on activities related to the Fellowship & Award Team’s work, including our Trustworthy AI goals. Join us and become part of our mission to promote openness, innovation, and opportunity online!

Responsibilities:

Advancing Mozilla’s philanthropic mission:

  • Supporting Program Officers in managing Calls for Proposals and fellowship recruitment
  • Co-facilitating working groups across funding streams and with alumni
  • Supporting learnings from grant cycles as well as grantees and fellows to help inform future funding
  • Supporting fellows and awardees in having their work be seen at conferences and other spaces (outside the media)

Providing programmatic support for the Fellowships & Awards team:

  • Coordinating on landscape analyses/research to support and inform current and future program strategy
  • Creating new program documentation and guidelines to support fellows and awardees
  • Collaboratively designing regional and global convenings within and across funding streams, as well as facilitating participant engagement at other Mozilla hosted events like MozFest

Facilitating the open sharing of learning from F&A programs:

  • Helping to facilitate knowledge sharing with funders (both existing and potential), with movement partners, and through external events
  • Documenting program activities and learning to share internally and externally
  • Analysing data to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of programs in meeting defined program goals
  • Curating and building public repositories to support funding streams

Required Qualifications:

  • At least 3 years of relevant job experience
  • Excellent writing, editing and verbal communications skills
  • Demonstrated ability to get up to speed quickly on complex issues and handle multiple simultaneous projects with many moving pieces
  • Facility for synthesising complex topics (and ideally, technical topics) into engaging and creative communications
  • Project and portfolio management skills, including experience developing new processes
  • Proven ability to work well in a team setting across time zones; you know how to collaborate and also when to work independently
  • Strong attention to detail
