Staff Software Engineer, Lumi

Job Description

Narvar is growing! We are hiring a Staff Software Engineer at Lumi (a Narvar company) to develop various aspects of Lumi’s two-sided B2B marketplace, build performance optimizations, resolve bugs, and create engaging user experiences. You will be part of a tight-knit software engineering team made up of all levels of experience, giving you the opportunity to share and receive knowledge while contributing to an amazing product.

We are looking for a full-stack developer with skills in both backend and frontend development. On the backend you should have the ability to implement new API routes, modify the platform’s internal data model, and build integrations with external systems. At the same time you should have experience with frontend development, helping achieve polished UI and fast page load speeds that contribute to optimal user engagement and satisfaction.

We use PureScript and React on the frontend and Haskell and Postgres on the backend. On the PureScript side, we use our own purescript-react-basic bindings, and purescript-lumi-components, a UI component library that we built and open-sourced. We get a lot of utility from PureScript’s type system, leveraging the compiler in order to ensure that we don’t get IDs for different entities mixed up, that all API calls are type correct, and that all form data is appropriately validated before it is used. On the Haskell side, we primarily use Servant and Esqueleto. We don’t expect candidates to have experience with all these things. We’d like to find engineers who are interested in learning more about these, and we’ll be happy to teach you.

Day-to-day

• Build, ship, and iterate on new and existing features.
• Work with Product and Design to help define what problems we solve and how to solve them.
• Collaborate with a talented and passionate team of engineers to get things done.
• Fully own your work - whether creating some architectural improvements to increase our codebase’s efficiency; leading a project to deliver a new feature; collaborating with designers to create the best UX; or fixing a serious bug, you take ownership of your work, providing transparency, cooperating with stakeholders, advocating for your needs, and delivering results.

What we're looking for

• 8+ years of professional experience in full stack development
• Comfortable working remotely and with minimal supervision
• Able to manage development projects from start to finish, from planning and time estimation, through development and testing, to documentation and deployment.
• Able to collaborate with non-technical members of staff to gather and distill project requirements.
• A learner and a teacher; looking to constantly expand knowledge and skill set, while helping others to do the same.
• Demonstrated experience using type systems or functional programming languages to solve problems that deliver real business value.
• Shipping production code on a fast but reliable cadence.
• Some experience with strongly typed languages such as Haskell or PureScript.
• Some experience with Postgres and data modeling
• Some experience contributing or maintaining open source projects.
