Job Description

Here at Appian, we’re passionate about technology. We love making it, and we love using it. Joining Appian Engineering will provide you with the opportunity to learn in an environment that values cross-functional collaboration and is committed to personal and professional growth. We want to revolutionize the way people work, and in doing so, we develop the Appian platform to be simple so our customers can thrive.

As a Product Manager in the Cloud Services group, your mission will be to make that goal possible. You will be part of an empowered, global engineering team, drive product strategy and partner closely with cross-functional teams to define and deliver on the next phase of our cloud services.

The Cloud Services group is responsible for the core infrastructure on which all Appian Cloud customer sites run. This position is for you if you are deeply interested in cloud infrastructure and services, and especially if you are experienced with modern cloud native architectures, containerization, and orchestration. As such, we are looking for a person with a strong technical background and a desire to apply that expertise to decisions that have direct customer impact.

What You'll Do:

  • Work on an agile team to prioritize, define, and ensure success of infrastructure features for a high-level strategic roadmap, as well as increments of value continuously delivered at the sprint level.
  • Prioritize what we should build and in which order we should build them by analyzing internal and external customer use cases, understanding technology trends, incorporating information security requirements, and collaborating with stakeholders on product vision and strategy.
  • Share ideas and receive feedback on new features through presentations each quarter before a new release.
  • Define how infrastructure features will work through collaboration with engineers in design sessions, architecture diagrams, InfoSec review, and usability testing.
  • Manage the release and sprint backlog through planning and backlog grooming, working with squad coaches, engineers, and other product managers as needed.
  • Write detailed specifications for your peer product managers, developers, and other stakeholders to review and provide feedback on.
  • Track adoption and usage of new features, applying appropriate metrics and analytics to evaluate whether they are having the desired impact.
  • See features through documentation, prioritization of bugs and enhancements, and usage analysis.

As part of the Cloud Services group, there are product management opportunities across different teams:

  • Email Infrastructure - responsible for the email management experience end-to-end, including in-product functionality, networking, authentication (SPF, DKIM, DMARC), reliability, scalability, etc.
  • Governance - responsible for the automation and orchestration of the operations required to run customer sites and other mission critical systems globally, while maintaining a state of control and compliance with top security standards.
  • Web Layer - responsible for providing a secure and reliable global network that aims to deliver content to Appian Cloud end users as quickly as possible, using technologies such as NGINX, Apache HTTP, TLS, WAF, CDN, etc.

About You:

  • Strong technical background, likely as a former cloud services software developer who later became a product manager or product owner.
  • Strategic thinker and problem solver with a proven ability to prioritize, negotiate, and execute in order to accomplish amazing things.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills; ability to draw clarity out of complex and ever-changing environments.
  • Demonstrated technical background with a deep understanding of key concepts related to availability, scalability, resiliency, and security and / or experience with managing the operations and maintenance of production systems.
  • Eager to learn new skills and technologies.
  • 2+ years of experience, ideally as a Product Owner for a Scrum team.

Nice to Have:

  • Experience participating in day-to-day technical and design decisions for large scale systems and services.
  • Associate Level AWS Certification or hands on experience designing and launching products that leverage AWS Services (Cloudwatch, EC2, ELB, Route53, S3, VPC) to support mission-critical systems.
  • Sound understanding of the value of cutting edge infrastructure technologies like Kubernetes and concepts like Infrastructure as Code.

Preferred Education:

BA/BS in Computer Science or related field

Preferred Experience Level:

2+ years of experience, ideally in a Product Owner role currently, or with a well-informed desire to become a product manager.
