Role overview:

The Engineering Technician and Lab Manager undertakes engineering build and review tasks as well as lab and engineering equipment management activities in conjunction with other team members to ensure that prototypes, products and systems are efficiently developed, manufactured and supported to perform as intended to meet customer and business requirements and that the engineering equipment and labs are managed and maintained in a clean, safe, usable and presentable state to support the needs of the business.

Primary responsibilities:

  • With minimal supervision or guidance, support the engineering team in the design and build of prototypes, working with procurement where required, to specify and obtain the required parts and services. Once these are obtained, manufacture, assemble and operate the equipment as required.
  • Provide technical advice and support on electrical and mechanical safety, as well as electrical and mechanical parts design and manufacture, to engineering and other departments. Identify and report issues and risks in a proactive manner and work cooperatively with other team members at all times.
  • Troubleshoot electrical and/or mechanical issues and perform failure analysis of equipment, prototypes and products. Carry out associated repair or modification activities.
  • Ensure that labs are equipped, developed and maintained in a clean, safe and organised manner to support their efficient and safe operation and use by others. The appearance of the labs must suitably represent the professionalism and capability of Collins Aerospace particularly when viewed by customers, visitors and other stakeholders.
  • Identify the current and future needs of lab users and manage lab and engineering equipment procurement, installation, qualification, retirement and disposal as required to ensure that the labs are fit for purpose and meet the changing needs of the business. Manage the associated equipment procurement, calibration, maintenance, modification, repair and disposal records, ensuring that it meets Quality System requirements.
  • Maintain the lab and engineering equipment and manage equipment calibration requirements. Perform or coordinate the required calibration activity to ensure that equipment is maintained in a safe and accurate condition so it can perform as required for its intended use.
  • Manage customer and company products and other equipment to ensure its build state, serviceability and calibration status is known, documented and labelled, that its location is always known, that it is appropriately stored, protected, serviced, maintained and used safely and correctly.
  • When specialist technical skills are required, undertake low volume electrical, mechanical and other production training, build and support tasks, as directed.
  • Undertake product testing including verification and validation activities and report results with minimal to no supervision.
  • Conduct experiments and report results as requested by engineering staff and support the design, build, set-up, operation and dismantlement of product demonstrations.
  • Communicate and collaborate effectively and professionally with other engineering team members, other company staff, customers, sub-contractors and suppliers.
  • Produce timely project and support deliverables including technical documentation of high quality that is clear and concise with content that is sufficient to meet both project and future support needs while complying with Quality System requirements to meet both company and customer needs.
  • Contribute to the development of new design and build approaches, techniques and technologies as well as process and quality improvements to support continual improvement.

Skills and experience:

Essential

  • Electrical and mechanical assembly experience at a highly skilled level.
  • Experience managing lab equipment.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of engineering configuration management.
  • Ability to use engineering information systems to record and manage information.
  • Technical training in an engineering field, including electrical safety training and at least 5 years practical, hands-on experience.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain an Australian Security Clearance (security clearance is required).
  • Australian Citizenship is required.
  • Ability to travel to support customer meetings in Australia (flexibility and notice will be given).

Desirable

  • Demonstrated proficiency working in an engineering R&D environment.
  • Previous experience managing engineering labs and complex, high technology electrical, electronic or avionics equipment.
  • Electrical and mechanical design experience.
  • Additional formal qualifications of relevance to the role.
  • Knowledge of and experience with engineering design and development processes.
  • Formal training in systems engineering and configuration management.
