The Team

BuzzFeed’s data science team is diverse, coming from varying backgrounds, experiences, and skill sets. The team uses data-driven methods to power decisions, inform strategy, build robust data products, and identify opportunities for innovation across the company. We are true hybrids - software engineers, statisticians, mathematicians, domain experts and analysts - who specialize in translating questions into methodical approaches, experiments, and products. We think deeply about the limitations of data, and communicate our output coherently.

The Role

Our 2022 summer internship program is now taking applicants. Our program runs for 12 weeks starting in June, and it is designed for the next generation of data scientists eager to gain experience building real world machine learning software and products. Past summer internship projects have included using natural language processing to extract product attributes, building a predictive model for selecting the optimal Facebook page to share a post on, and improving our article recommendation engine.

Last year, our internship program was fully remote due to the pandemic. However, things are going to be a little different this year. You will be given the option to work remotely or in-office (in accordance with our vaccine policy), or a combination of the two! To qualify, you must be enrolled and returning to school upon completion of the internship. PhD students in the areas of computer science, data science, information studies, and related fields are preferred. This is a paid internship.

Requirements

• You must be legally eligible to work in the US.
• You must be graduating in December 2022 or later.
• You will have the option to work from our New York office or remotely. Approved remote work locations include the following states: California, Colorado, Connecticut, D.C, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Washington.
• You’ll be paid fairly, in line with tech industry standards.
