Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience
• 2 years of experience with software development in one or more programming languages, or 1 year of experience with an advanced degree
• 2 years of experience with data structures or algorithms in either an academic or industry setting
• Experience with Linux, device drivers and embedded programming in C

Preferred qualifications:

• Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science or related technical field
• 2 years of experience working with embedded operating systems
• Experience building consumer electronics and knowledge of manufacturing, supply chain, and customer support processes
• Experience working with Git, Gerrit, or developing for open source software such as Zephyr OS
• Knowledge of ARM assembly, system BIOS, Linux kernel, device drivers
• Ability to read hardware schematics and investigate hardware issues

Chrome OS is Google’s operating system, providing simple, secure, speedy, stateless, and shared computing for a scalable ecosystem of devices from desktops to laptops to tablets.

The ChromeOS Firmware team writes firmware to make Chrome OS devices the fastest-booting, most secure, and most reliable laptop, desktops, tablets. The team works with every Chromebook that goes out.

In this role, you will join the Chrome OS Firmware team and work on low-level embedded software, new device bring-ups, and open-source technologies. You will collaborate with a team of kernel, firmware, and hardware engineers to define and implement features, improvements and processes to deliver high-quality devices to the market.

Additionally, you will get to develop bootloaders and embedded controller software for a wide range of Chrome OS devices and contribute to open-source coreboot and Zephyr OS projects. Throughout the development, you will also find ways to improve scalability and maintainability of our codebase and enhance collaboration with external ODMs, OEMs, chip/SOC vendors, and global internal teams.

Responsibilities

• Work with a larger team of engineers and product managers to design and develop firmware features.
• Participate in board bring-ups and work with partners to deliver Chrome OS devices.
• Evaluate and help improve firmware code and processes for scalability and maintainability.
• Collaborate with a global team of software and hardware engineers on new technology proposals and process improvements.
• Maintain the high-quality bar by increasing unit and integration test coverage.
