What is the opportunity?

RBC Capital Markets is seeking an Associate to join our Municipal Investment Banking team specializing in the financing of Affordable Housing – Multi-Family and Single Family – in our branch office located in downtown St. Petersburg, Florida. Over the last five years (2016-2020), RBC Capital Markets’ affordable housing group has been ranked as the #1 ranked municipal housing bond underwriter (combined single and multifamily) based on true economics to Book Runner. The firm’s national affordable housing platform includes bankers based in New York, Boston, St. Petersburg, Cincinnati, Minneapolis, Denver and San Francisco.

The Associate will work with the three investment bankers based in the office on multi-family and single family bond financings issued by state and local housing finance authorities in the state of Florida. Clients include a wide range of Florida-based and national affordable multi-family developers financing apartment communities using tax exempt bond financing. The Municipal Finance Associate, provides analytical, research and transactional support to investment bankers in housing departmental work activities relating to the structuring and issuance of multifamily and single family housing bonds through negotiated, competitive sale or via private placement. Associate is involved in every aspect of our business and plays critical roles on banking teams serving a broad base of clients, including leading transaction conference calls and attending client meetings.

What will you do?

  • Perform research, analytics, and financial modeling required to complete a transaction.
  • Produce extensive financial analyses to structure both straight forward and complex bond offerings.
  • Take increasing role on client coverage teams, including managing transaction conference calls and participating in issuer meetings and closings.
  • Prepare projections, bond / loan portfolio analysis and modeling & related financial analyses for potential & actual multifamily and single family capital markets transactions, including data conversion, synthesis & analysis.
  • Working with developer and title agent, prepare bond closing memorandums evidencing transaction flow of funds.
  • Prepare term sheets, marketing materials, proposals, and client presentations, describing in detail financing alternatives in originating, structuring and marketing an issue and our ability to perform the underwriting functions in a capable manner.
  • Develop an understanding of economic and political forces affecting the issuance bonds and the bond market through internal and external resources.
  • Enhance the Department’s use and knowledge of available information pertaining to the bond market by collecting, organizing and maintaining various marketing materials and information resources.
  • Coordinate the various activities, internal and external, relating to pricing and settlement of multifamily and single family bond transactions. Works closely with management and Investment Bankers to secure closings.
  • Develops data and analytical processing skills, a proficient knowledge of available computer programs & improves data processing system to enhance departmental efficiency.
  • Other such duties, responsibilities and authority as may be reasonably required, consistent with the purposes for which you are being hired and your background, experience and prior business activity.

What do you need to succeed?

Must have

  • BA/BS degree in Business Administration, Finance, or Economics with demonstrated record of high achievement.
  • 3 to 5 years of related professional Multifamily Real Estate or Municipal Finance experience.
  • Proficiency with personal computers and standard productivity applications.
  • Obtain and maintain Securities Industry Essentials Exam (SIE), Series 52, 63 and 79 licenses
  • Quantitative and qualitative analytical skills; strong knowledge of finance and accounting – able to analyze number proficiently
  • Highly motivated, committed and responsible, with a demonstrated ability to manage conflicting priorities and requests.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain relationships at all organizational levels
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to take initiative and function independently balanced with strong teaming skills.
  • Maintain high standards of professional and ethical conduct.

Nice to Have

  • Masters or MBA with emphasis in Finance, Accounting, Public Administration or Finance is preferred.
