What is the opportunity?

Ampli, an RBC Venture, is a free cash back app focused on helping Canadians get rewarded for their everyday purchases. We are hiring a Data Engineering Lead – a senior data engineer with a lot of experience building scalable, performant, secure, and observable cloud-based data platforms. In this role, you will manage a data engineering team while remaining hands-on-keyboard to solve some of Ampli’s toughest data challenges. Ampli is building a platform and pipeline with data from multiple internal and external sources, creating semantic layers, managing large data sets, and working with machine learning products to enable batch and real time event processing as well as advanced analytics. In short, we’re looking for folks who have built (and continue to build) a lot of cool, well-designed data services and who want to share their knowledge and experience by being a technical leader in our organization.

What will you do?

• Manage a team of dedicated data engineers and mentor them as they design, test, and deploy our data platform
• Work closely with key data stakeholders, including the Product, Data Science, Insights, and Development teams with data-related initiatives and support their data engineering needs
• Build and manage large-scale batch and real-time data pipelines using modern cloud technology
• Clear roadblocks for your team and empower them to do their best work
• Participate and be a thought leader in meetings with business and technical leads to help make decisions and achieve short and long-term goals while taking many factors into consideration (product roadmap, target metrics, budget constraints, operational stability, technical risk, etc)
• Ownership and responsibility for operational best practices including effective logging, application performance monitoring, application health monitoring, and supporting issues in the production environment
• Be an evangelist for Ampli and the RBC Ventures Tech brand both within RBC and outside of RBC
• Work with an awesome team in a challenging but rewarding environment

The ideal candidate will have experience with:

• Dealing with structured and unstructured data sets, data analytics, and big data pipelines and infrastructure
• Managing a high-performing data engineering team
• Owning and operating a production data and analytics platform
• Designing and implementing data infrastructure to house large sets of consumer and transaction data, leveraging AWS platform services
• Supporting Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform, Microsoft Azure, or related cloud platforms
• Implementing and supporting data pipelines for extraction, transformation, and modelling from a wide variety of data sources using SQL, NoSQL, GraphQL, SAAS APIs, and related technologies
• Preparing analytical datasets to support data modeling and machine learning use cases
• Leveraging strong computer science fundamentals with experience building highly secure, production-ready applications
• Communicating effectively to sell stakeholders on proposed actions and solutions

The superlative candidate will have experience with:

• Experience in the marketing analytics space
• Familiarity with common data science techniques and models
• Experience working with large financial institutions
• Experience with Apache Airflow, AWS Glue, AWS RedShift, AWS EMR, Tableau, Metabase, or related big data tools
• Experience with AWS Kinesis Firehose, AWS Kinesis Streams, and AWS SageMaker, or equivalent data / machine learning services
