Carbon Credit Senior Manager – Sustainability
Mars’ GHG commitments are anchored in our strategies and programs to reduce emissions in our direct operations and across our complete value chain. We know that to achieve our short and long term objectives across both brands and the overall business, we will also need to be active participants in removal based carbon credit markets and project development. This global role will lead our activities in carbon credits outside our value chain and requires a world class subject matter expert in project development and contracting.
This is a dynamic and fast evolving space so we’re looking for someone to help shape our vision of the future and Mars’ role in it.
What we are looking for:
Education & Professional Qualification
•B.S. degree (Masters preferred) in Sustainability, Finance, Environmental Management or equivalent
Knowledge/Experience
•>5 years’ experience in a role focused on carbon removal project development & voluntary market transactions
•Deep technical knowledge of carbon accounting standards & methods
•Extensive network & strategic relationships in the carbon removal project development space.
•Ability to translate science into business relevant polices and positions and communicate those to business teams.
•Ability to contribute to multi-stakeholder initiatives aimed at refining or applying science.
•Demonstrated creativity in problem solving and the ability to take an idea through to implementation.
•Experience managing complex programs requiring significant engagement with decentralized, cross functional stakeholders
•International and emerging market experience strongly preferred
Physical and/or mental requirements
•Approximately 50% travel will be required including international travel
What you’ll be doing:
Portfolio Management
Own the development, maintenance and significant expansion of Mars’ carbon credit portfolio and investments, working in close coordination with Mars’ Commercial (procurement) and Finance teams. Be the internal technical expert and maintain the coherence of our policies, positions and decision making in coordination with the SiG Plan impact leads in both the Healthy Planet and Thriving People teams. Work with the Sustainability Governance & Data team to translate those positions & principles into concrete metric tracking & reporting systems.
Internal Demand Planning
Develop and coordinate the internal carbon credit demand management systems across both brand and segment demands working closely with brand leads, segment sustainability and S&F teams. Coordinate with brands to understand desired project attributes beyond carbon to maximize brand resonance/relevance.
Carbon Neutral Certification
Manage the governance process for evaluating brand goals related to carbon neutrality and coaching teams through the internal approval and external certification processes. For approved certifications, coordinate the 3rd party validation, certification and publication processes with the relevant business unit and Healthy Planet Team
External Standards/Protocols
Be the Mars expert on the science and standards behind carbon removals in the credit market. Recommend appropriate standards and policies consistent with our approach. Represent Mars and actively influence the development and evolution of external standards.
