The opportunity

Job Title: Data Scientist - Experimentation and Causal Inference

Department: Product Engineering

Reporting to: Senior Data Science Manager

Location: Fleet Place, London

Overview:

Just Eat Takeaway.com is one of the largest food delivery companies in the world, connecting millions of customers to restaurants and orders to delivery drivers. To make this experience better and better, we constantly experiment with everything we do so that we deliver the best possible experience to our customers. This is where the Experimentation Team comes into play.

What you will do:

As a Data Scientist in our Experimentation Team, you will work at the intersection of data science, statistics, and product analytics. You will help build and support our experimentation capability for fast, insightful, trustworthy and reliable experimentation at scale. Working alongside and collaborating with an established and high-calibre team of engineers, data scientists and analysts, you will contribute to our underlying data infrastructure enabling us to automatically extract insights from hundreds of experiments automatically while also working on bespoke data deep-dives to support stakeholders with individual experiment needs. You will define success metrics in close collaboration with product managers and analysts and help evaluate and communicate experiment insights to relevant stakeholders. You will attend regular team stand-ups to discuss work done. You will teach your team new tricks and learn from them as well, taking on board feedback from other data scientists, including reviews of your code. You will be comfortable exploring data to visualise and explain hypotheses and models. Most importantly, your work will directly contribute to building the world’s most customer-friendly food delivery app.

Who you are:

If you are passionate about customers and food and also enjoy wrangling data, discussing statistical methodology, building data visualisations and communicating complicated concepts to stakeholders, we would like to hear from you!

Required skills and experience

Desired Qualifications:

Note that we don’t expect you to tick each and every box as long as you have a passion for experimentation and data-driven decision making and are eager to learn the rest:

  • MSc / PhD degree in a quantitative discipline (eg. econ, stats, cs, biomed, physics, epidemiology), or equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrable experience wrangling and analysing data.
  • Communication skills will be paramount in this role. You need the ability to communicate business outcomes and recommendations from analysis verbally, in writing and during presentations. In this stakeholder-facing role, you will also explain statistical concepts and guide decision makers on the interpretation of the results.
  • Strong interpersonal skills: you will connect and collaborate with colleagues and stakeholders from various teams.
  • Some experience working in agile teams, with code reviews and Git.
  • Experience with the design/analysis of experiments (e.g. A/B tests, RCTs).
  • Ability to develop confidently in Python and SQL (Google BQ) with a good command of software development best practices or the willingness to learn.
  • Experience with data visualization (Tableau, DataStudio).
  • Some familiarity with Google Analytics/Optimizely would be a plus.

Preferred experience can include:

  • Expertise in causal inference techniques using both experimental and observational data (IV, matching, RDD, DiD, DAG, causal forests) would be a bonus.
  • Experience with statistical modelling, including quantile regressions, Bayesian hierarchical models, anomaly detection, variance reduction, bootstrap and Monte Carlo simulations.
  • Comfortable with Airflow, Docker and Big Data stores (Google BigQuery, Amazon Datastores).
  • Experience with the wider machine learning and AI toolbox besides expertise in experimentation is beneficial. This can include multi-armed bandits, recommender systems, simulation-based techniques etc.
