The Role As a Privacy Counsel, you will have the unique opportunity to work at the intersection of Palantir's in-house Data Protection Office (DPO) and our Privacy and Civil Liberties (PCL) team. DPO is a mission-driven team of lawyers that works to ensure Palantir can meet its legal obligations and advance our international business in a privacy-compliant way. Our PCL team is an interdisciplinary team of software engineers, data scientists, policy strategists, and applied ethicists who strive to provide our customers with first-in-class data protection and data governance functionalities by design. In this role, you will collaborate with these teams from our German base of operations, helping us run a successful data protection management system in Germany and the EU, while supporting a first-class, worldwide privacy program, seamlessly incorporating local workflows into Palantir’s global data protection efforts.
Core Responsibilities
- Support Palantir’s privacy and data protection compliance program, including our continuous efforts to meet our obligations under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and German data protection law.
- Assist with contractual negotiations as it relates to data protection in Europe, and provide actionable and practical guidance to product teams and management on European privacy and data protection issues, with a focus on Germany.
- Help ensure Palantir’s products and services comply with applicable laws and meet the needs of our customers.
- Analyze existing, and stay up-to-date on ongoing, legislative and regulatory developments to ensure that Palantir understands and remains compliant with evolving requirements.
- Develop policies, procedures, and workshops that help Palantirians issue spot data protection issues early and determine the best course of action.
- Provide Palantir deployment and product teams with concrete guidance on practical implications of German and EU data protection requirements for their day-to-day work
- Represent Palantir externally, speak at academic and industry events, and engage with data protection regulators, industry groups and other key stakeholders.
- Support Palantir’s legal team ad hoc with other legal and contractual matters as they pertain to the German and global business more broadly.
What We Value
- Demonstrated experience as a practicing lawyer in Germany, with a particular focus on German data protection obligations
- Demonstrated ability to lead customer conversations and negotiate contracts in German
- Demonstrated ability to balance legal risk with the commercial needs of the business
- Experience working on German employee privacy law and international data transfers
- A basic understanding of SaaS and cloud-based technology, and the ability to break down complex legal constructs into a language engineers will understand
- Experience working in a technology company, in a law firm or consulting firm as product or privacy counsel
- Ability to multitask, problem solve in the face of ambiguity, and balance competing priorities in a rapidly changing environment
- Aptitude for building strategic cross-functional working relationships by utilizing strong communication and interpersonal skills
Requirements
- Fluency in German and English
- Fully trained German lawyer (Volljurist with both Staatsexamen)
