Your Mission As a Director of Engineering at Apollo, you will build, sustain, and foster an engineering team centered around teamwork, excellence, productivity, and growth. Competencies - Problem-solving : You are self-motivated and passionate about pursuing excellence, and enjoy adapting to and tackling problems that block you from reaching your goals - Execution : You are able to effectively plan, organize, and execute on initiatives in a timely and efficient manner. - Expectations : You have high expectations for the team's happiness, unity, growth, and level of execution and delivery. - Empathy: As a mentor and as a teammate, you are an intent listener that is compassionate and puts people first, and you are tactful with both accepting and delivering criticism to others - Driving alignment : You have the ability to set goals, align, and drive improvements within the team Daily Adventures and Responsibilities: - Participation in key technical decision-making discussions such as sprint planning, software design, and occasionally code reviews - Help build and scale a world-class engineering team by sourcing and hiring engineering manager candidates - Hold systematic weekly 1:1 touch points with engineering managers to mentor, deliver, and receive quality feedback - Collaborate closely to develop and execute on personalized goals - Conduct objective and helpful quarterly bi-annual performance reviews for engineering managers Skills and Relevant Experiences - 2+ years of hands-on software engineering industry experience - 5-7+ years of engineering management experience Great to have - BS or MS degree from a university in a technical discipline (e.g. CS, Math, Engineering) - Should have fundamentals in software architecture at scale, effective engineering processes, devops, and cross-team functions. - Experience hiring A+ engineering managers Key Outcomes Within the first 1st month: -Begin by inheriting a team of engineers: lay the groundwork for building strong relationships for engineers and other lead counterparts: understanding their strengths, weaknesses, and career ambitions - Understand : Learn, familiarize, and integrate yourself within Apollo's existing engineering strategy, processes, and pain points - Observe: Critically observe and actively make suggestions for improving development and management processes within Apollo engineering. Develop a SWOT for the engineering organization. - Hiring: Begin involvement in the hiring of excellent engineering managers across multiple teams - Work closely with key leadership counterparts such as other engineering leaders, the CTO, Product Managers, and Designers to deliver high quality software at a rapid pace for an ever-increasing user base Within the first 3 months: - Begin upscaling standards and processes by making suggestions based on SWOT analysis conducted in the first month - Vision: Serve as a leader by helping the team define, set, and adhere to goals and expectations - Culture: Drive a consistently high employee cultural satisfaction score, with focuses around teamwork, excellence, learning, and fun Within the 4-6th months - Management: Proficiency with collecting and delivering effective feedback to engineering manager reportees. - Technical: Be a source of technical leadership, especially for complex and large-scale projects - Hiring : Double the headcount of excellent engineering managers across key teams in the organization as well, setting those teams up for autonomous success.
