Strategy, Digital, & Innovation (SDI)

Strategy, Digital & Innovation group is responsible for Corporate Strategy and its Digital and Innovation teams. The group positions Wells Fargo for the future by enhancing the company’s focus on planning for the digital future and investing in the customer experience. The group leads corporate strategic planning; defines and manages digital platform standards and capabilities; and manages innovation priorities, opportunities, and companywide efforts to drive transformation. The team works closely with the company’s Technology Group and business lines to deliver digital solutions and innovation to customers that are integrated, intuitive, and seamless across channels.

The Role

The Quality and Operations Group (QOG) Risk Transformation Program Leader will lead an organization responsible for cross-functional business initiatives that enhance customer experience, decrease risk, and increase overall efficiency. This leader is responsible for delivering and executing on common service program initiatives across SDI. By providing leadership, strategic planning experience, and executive business support, this role will initially focus on building a high-performing Shared Services team that will be the foundation for important business outcomes across SDI that include, but are not limited to: focused investments that strengthen customer satisfaction; increased digitization and automation; drive innovation and a culture committed to continuous improvement.

The successful candidate will work closely with other senior leaders across SDI and the enterprise in the development and execution of company risk program transformation activities. Accordingly, critical success factors will include the ability to develop partnerships with many business and functional areas, provide insight into the economic climate and related market developments, and identify trends which may present opportunities or reflect gaps in the Company’s risk management execution/direction.

Key responsibilities and accountabilities include the following:

  • Ensure that SDI is aligned to the Wells Fargo Target Operating Model consistent with the Risk Management Framework and policies established by Independent Risk Management (IRM)
  • Influence and navigate across the business, driving the right outcomes based on business needs
  • Lead the cross functional transformation risk programs across SDI and its adjacent organizations
  • Ensure activities are consistent with the Enterprise Risk frameworks, policies, and programs and risk appetite framework; and to ensure they are well-calibrated and integrated within the line of business
  • Manage relationships and foster a team orientation with business heads, Chief Control Executive team, independent risk management, legal, and audit
  • Build a high performing organization and ensure proper staffing and expertise exists at the line of business level and build capabilities, processes and teams that meet heightened risk management expectations
  • Lead stakeholder management for committees and working groups such as the Senior Steering Committee, SDI Stakeholders: drive agendas and materials required and approve material content, prepare talking points for senior leadership to take to enterprise committees.
  • Direct change management activities in concert with SDI leaders to ensure successful deployment of the program.
  • Serve as main Point of contact with third parties contributing to the program.
  • Ensure program follow up and resolution on key risks and issues.
  • Collaborate with senior and mid-level leaders in the SDI business and Control, second line independent risk management.

The Candidate

The successful candidate will have accomplishments in building and leading high performing, industry-leading customer focused teams in the financial services industry. This executive will have experience leading a best-in-class organization leveraging highly disciplined business, financial, digital, data & analytic, and risk management processes.


Required Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in one or more of the following functional areas: business process, quality assurance, strategic planning, or project management
  • 8+ years of management experience


Other Desired Qualifications
  • 7+ years in risk management with experience in the following
    • Leading risk transformation programs
    • Deep understanding of risk framework, corporate/business policies, and programs to translate into plans for the business, function and/or risk type
    • Experience in a Regulatory Reporting environment or exposure to position/transaction processes/life-cycle, including involvement in building new systems to meet complex reporting requirements
  • Excellent knowledge of Financial Markets, Banking Industry, Digital Platforms and products or significant exposure to equities products within a similar environment
  • Understanding of Strategy, Digital & Innovation business operations, processes, products, and customer interactions and where they manifest risk
  • Meaningful knowledge across enterprise risk management framework, including: risk identification, risk appetite and strategy, risk-related decisions, processes and controls, risk analytics and governance
  • Understanding of best-practice risk management techniques across financial services industry
  • Knowledge of relevant financial regulations and understanding of how they are implemented, managed and enforced
  • Deep understanding of risk framework, corporate/business policies, and programs to translate into plans for the business, function and/or risk type
  • Experience in a Regulatory Reporting environment or exposure to position/transaction processes/life-cycle, including involvement in building new systems to meet complex reporting requirements, is helpful
  • Proven leadership and project management skills to drive alignment across stakeholder groups to develop and deliver repeatable end to end risk management solutions and controls aligned with business/customer processes
  • Proven ability to build and lead high performing risk management organization in a matrixed environment, ensure proper staffing and expertise exists and can coach and enable others in risk management and risk ownership
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Highly motivated with an organized work style and the ability to work calmly in a high energy environment
  • Discrete when handling confidential information
  • Able to demonstrate a high level of integrity with a mature approach to work
  • Strong interpersonal, influencing, and communications skills with an ability to interact effectively with stakeholders and regulators, to include virtual, matrixed leadership experience and the ability to effectively manage and build relationships across the enterprise at all levels
  • Demonstrated leadership ability that embodies the Wells Fargo Vision and Values and leadership competencies
  • Ethical integrity and demonstrated ability to assess and determine when to raise concerns and escalate
  • Strong analytical ability used to identify risks and confidently raise issues, escalate early and engage in constructive credible challenge and will do so independently when necessary
  • Proven ability to proactively manage and resolve conflict and effectively defend decisions with objective rationale
  • Educated to Bachelor degree level and/or equivalent experience/qualifications

Job Expectations

  • Ability to travel up to 30% of the time
