Salary: £38,300 - £47,900 (+ bonus and Benefits)

The WALTHAM Petcare Science Institute is Mars Petcare's world-renowned pet research centre. Our work focuses on the nutritional and behavioural needs of pets, as well as on preventive health. We have a rare and exciting opportunity to join our Research Team at our world renowned Petcare Science Institute in Waltham on the Wolds, Leicestershire. As our Senior Research Scientist Biomarkers, you will be formulating, designing and directing internal and external research projects in line with the agreed strategic research portfolio. This involves developing new methodologies and capabilities on your own or in collaboration across the Mars Petcare healthcare business.

What are we looking for?

  • PhD in a biological sciences-related subject with proven relevant experience
  • Programming experience using R or Python. Knowledge of experimental design and statistical data analytics methods and their application to -omics data. General understanding of data science methods. Experience of working with large data sets e.g. electronic medical records
  • Experience of designing and managing research projects to answer broad scientific questions.

What would be your key responsibilities?

  • Initiate, gain approval, resource, manage and report internal and external research projects that are aligned and deliver against the strategic goals of the Mars Petcare biomarkers programme. Specifically, the discovery and validation of biomarkers of health and disease and the application of these in the development of diagnostics and to evaluate the efficacy of interventions specifically relevant to companion animals.
  • To administer a budget of up to £400K
  • Supervise up to 3 research scientists and other support staff.
  • Communicate research outputs to key internal audiences through internal business reports and verbal communications.
  • Communicate research outputs to external audiences through presentations at scientific meetings and publication in peer reviewed journals.
  • Act as a subject matter expert providing advice and technical support to the global Mars Petcare business
