OPCoE enables new frontiers in visible-light and infrared systems, missile defense, space exploration and much more. Our members integrate experts across the nation, within Lockheed Martin, our industry partners and leading research universities, into one fast-acting, collaborative group.
Join us as a Staff Opto-Mechanical Engineer, where you will support the full life cycle of optical payload development from initial concept design through flight hardware delivery. This position is for an advanced individual contributor and/or team lead, who can perform as a Certified Principal Engineer (CPE) who owns and is accountable for all critical aspects of an assigned product throughout its lifecycle.
In this role, you will:
• Lead trade studies, analyses, design maturation, and drawing delivery for optical benches, optical element layouts, telescopes, optical mounts and fixtures, and active optical elements
• Perform structural (both static and vibrational), thermal and optical performance analyses, working with a cross-functional team of engineers to optimize payload performance
• Likely engage in the planning, conduct, and leadership of research and development efforts in the laboratory and via analysis
• Be a leading member of our team that designs and develops electro-optical instruments and payloads for civilian and military aerospace applications
You should have direct and relevant experience with optical systems, and be an emerging technical authority in opto-mechanical engineering. You will be expected to have proficiency with MS PowerPoint and Excel, and the ability to clearly communicate orally and in writing.
You would typically have a Bachelors degree and 9-15 years of experience, a Masters and 7-13, or a PhD and 3-10 years.

Basic Qualifications:
• Bachelors degree in engineering, physics, or optical sciences; or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Strong proficiency in a range of standard design tools applied to optomechanical design from among CREO, NASTRAN/NX, MATLAB, Solid Works, CATIA, ZEMAX, Python, and/or other relevant assets
• Experience with specification development, vendor interface, parts selection, and/or configuration control
• US citizenship and the ability to obtain a Top Secret security clearance
Desired Skills:
• 4+ years of experience with developing mechanical solutions for optical payloads or 6+ years working with related precision mechanisms and some optical experience
• In-depth industry or laboratory experience with electro-optical systems including or related to remote sensing systems, astronomical telescopes, lasers, and laboratory optical diagnostic instrumentation
• Proposal writing experience
• Basis of Estimate, Cost estimation experience, to include cost volume/section support on a proposal and/or program baseline establishment
• Program/Project Planning experience, working familiarity with MS-Project or related planning tools
• Experience leading a team or being the engineer in charge of a significant mechanical component, assembly, or above
• Possession of, or current background investigation that supports a TS/SCI/Poly clearance
