In this role, you have the opportunity to

Bring your experience and knowledge to Philips Research North America and join our journey of furthering the state of the art for advanced respiratory therapy devices. You will participate in teams chartered with creating, implementing, testing and validating innovative solutions for improving respiratory care in terms of patient outcome and patient comfort. Your mechanical engineering skills and expertise in mechanical ventilation and ventilators, along with your knowledge of computer simulation, will help Philips businesses create differentiating respiratory care products that benefit both patients and care providers. You will participate in collaborative relationships with business partners, respiratory care experts, clinical institutions, academia and governmental resources.

You are responsible for

• Interact with clinicians to assess patient and respiratory care provider needs
• Design, implement, test, maintain and operate physical-mechanical ventilation related research setups and computer simulations thereof
• Contribute to the implementation, test, and use of algorithms for mechanical ventilators
• Create intellectual property
• Write technical documentation.

To succeed in this role, you should have the following skills and experience

• Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, biomedical engineering or a related field.
• The candidate will demonstrate skills and experience with:
• Mechanical engineering/electrical engineering
• The fundamentals of mechanical ventilators and hospital respiratory care
• Developing, testing, and using experimental physical setups (including data acquisition)
• Developing, testing, and using computer simulations in Matlab/Simulink
• Developing, testing, and using software applications in Python
• Skills and experience in any of the following areas will be a plus:
• Respiratory physiology
• Modeling, simulating, and analyzing (e.g. physiological) systems
• Rapid prototyping
• Designing medical systems and devices
• Software engineering techniques (version control, unit testing, auto-documentation, ...)
• Leading a small team
• Planning and coordinating clinical studies
• Creating intellectual property
• Grant writing
• Working with multidisciplinary, cross-cultural teams
• Finally, the candidate is expected to
• Be self-motivated and skillful in problem-solving
• Be excited about hands-on design of experimentation with hardware and software
• Have excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Have a collaborative/team work spirit
