Job Description

About the Position

Members of the IT department work with the broader Technology group to monitor and maintain a mixed Windows and Linux environment spread across a physical and virtual computing landscape over three continents. Within IT, the Product Managers are responsible for creating, cultivating, and executing a sustainable life cycle plan (design, engineering, support, and sunset) for each of our many internal products, from our user-facing remote access platform to our back-end server management suite. In our trading environment, we have a variety of platforms (Windows, Linux, AWS), programming languages (F#, PowerShell, OCaml), and applications (in-house and vendor-provided) for operating our trading environment. Our Product Managers become familiar with as many of these technologies as necessary to coordinate across the teams.

As an IT Product Manager, you will both represent the needs of the internal end-users and understand the technical details of the products, platforms, and applications you will help manage, alongside your colleagues in engineering and operations. In this cross-functional role, you will be involved in activities such as implementing new features, rolling bugfixes, and timing maintenance tasks, gaining exposure to many segments of our business and working with our trading desks and international offices on a daily basis. You will also write reports on progress with succinct summaries alongside in-depth analysis, including root cause analysis and mitigation strategies. For medium- to large-sized projects in your domain, you will coordinate the execution of the plan, working with the global team. You will foster incremental change over long time periods, facilitating successive waves of user adoption, compiling feedback from users, engineers, and support, and incorporating it all into Jane Street’s unique operating model.

About You

  • Excellent written communication skills, covering both succinct, easy-to-read executive summaries and deep dives into nuanced technical subjects
  • Clear, concise, and empathetic verbal communication skills
  • Comfortable familiarity with technology generally, especially enterprise products relevant to medium-sized companies and an understanding of open source alternatives
  • Eagerness to understand a diverse, technical end-user environment and manage relationships within a fast-paced, federated organization with confidence and humility
  • Enthusiasm for discussing and deconstructing technical and organizational problems
  • Proven track record of internal marketing and culture carrying
  • Comfort working in a global environment across multiple time zones (we have offices in Asia, Europe, and the US)
  • Subject matter expertise in Windows (especially Active Directory, Group Policy, and other common Windows administration sub-systems), Linux, high performance computing, networking, IT support, or similar technical domain would be a bonus, but is not required to be successful in the role
  • Familiarity with software development and programming languages such as PowerShell, C#, or F# would be a bonus, but is not required
