WHAT YOU’LL DO
The Maintenance Mechanic’s Primary Function and responsibilities are:
- To maintain and improve plant mechanical systems and equipment in order to provide a high degree of safety, quality and productivity. Typical activities include but are not limited to: mechanical and machine component repair, mechanical fluid and utility systems troubleshooting; machine modifications and improvements; fabrication, machining, welding, installation or rearrangement of new or existing equipment; and total plant and facility maintenance.
- Use of precision tools and equipment to complete mechanical maintenance jobs. Follow all plant and department procedures, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP’s), Quality and general plant safety rules. Lead other employees including directing one or two other maintenance personnel on a job; filling in for the Crewleader as needed; and providing OJT for people new to the department. Record and communicate shift activity in an organized manner. Audit equipment and develop replacement part documents. Be certified for tank entry and lockout/tag out and confined space entry procedures.
- Provide support to primary plant operations. Total plant equipment coverage includes, but is not limited to: packaging lines, processing, drying, filling, HVAC, warehouse, Agglomerator, backflow preventers, seamers, pumps, and cafeteria. Assignments include: responding to equipment emergencies, performing mechanical PMs during operation or during periods of scheduled downtime; equipment lubrication; design and fabrication of mechanical items in response to customers’ work order requests; communicating routinely with line personnel and supervision to maintain knowledge of the latest production schedule; communicating potential equipment problems to production and maintenance supervisors to allow scheduling of repairs; and looking for and implementing equipment and system improvements.
- Perform mechanical repairs to production equipment and plant utility systems. This involves troubleshooting complex, high-speed filling and packaging machines; making machine adjustments to liquid line and powder seamers; timing mechanical systems such as rotary sterilizers or tray wrappers for proper operation; cutting of metal with a plasma cutter or torch; machining of parts on the lathe or mill for replacement or repair or worn parts.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE YOU’LL BRING
- High School Diploma/GED required.
- Minimum of three years of experience as an industrial or commercial Mechanic or the equivalent job experience or training is required.
- Understanding of mechanical system, mechanical and spatial aptitude is necessary for this position. Good mathematical and written skills are required. Ability to troubleshoot and determine the cause of improper machine operation, then make the necessary adjustments and repairs to return to proper operation. Knowledge of hydraulic, pneumatic, and fluid systems including knowledge of proper lubrication procedures with oil and grease. Seamer Certification via formal Angelus or Pneumatic Scale Seamer School (or equivalent) and demonstrated seamer proficiency. Obtain “Backflow Prevention Certification” by Michigan Mechanics and Plumbers and Construction Association. Welding Certification from area college or trade school. Attention to detail, good communication skills, and follow-up are very important in this position.
