Title: Associate Product Development Engineer

Location: Boca Raton, FL

Reports to: Manager, Program Management

Job Summary:

The Product Development Engineer will be responsible for new product development (NPD) projects for both new and existing products, while working within a cross-functional team. Some travel may be required. This position will:

  • Participate in the engineering efforts for NPD projects from conception through production launch, while following the Newell Product Development Process
  • Ensure the product meets or exceeds expectations from a cost, timing, and specification standpoint
  • Require the ability to work effectively with other disciplines including Marketing, Industrial Design, Manufacturing, Quality, and Supply Chain

Job Responsibilities by Capability:

Project Execution

  • Have a basic awareness of a stage gate process
  • Have a basic understanding of how to determine new product costs, capital expenses, and competitive benchmarking
  • Understand existing technologies used in industry
  • Fundamental understanding of ideation techniques
  • Basic understanding of the importance of intellectual property for an organization

Quality

  • Understand how to use Six Sigma approaches, standard deviations, and process capability (Cpk)
  • Basic understanding of metrology equipment used
  • Ability to lead DFMEA and/or PFMEA and distinguish between program, safety, business, regulatory, and consumer satisfaction risk
  • Ability to lead root cause analysis, lean process, and Kaizen activities

Product Performance

  • Ability to assist in writing technical specifications for the development and implementation of new products
  • Ability to create test methods from identified risks in the DFMEA
  • Defines non-technical deliverables that contribute to successful product releases
  • Ability to use design tools to create components and basic assemblies
  • Contributes to the ECR/ECN entry

Manufacturing

  • Basic understanding of manufacturing equipment used on our products
  • Basic understanding of major tools and techniques used in manufacturing process
  • Basic understand about how to select a supplier

Materials

  • Basic understanding of the materials used in our products
  • Basic understanding of how to identify types of materials used in manufacturing
  • Ability to understand the functional and aesthetic requirements of product design

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering required
  • 1-4 years in related field required
  • Demonstrates strong knowledge of problem solving techniques and methodologies
  • Demonstrates hands on prototyping/design validation model building knowledge
  • Demonstrates Strong Static/Dynamic analytical skills
  • Demonstrates CAD modeling experience (Creo preferred)
  • Demonstrates knowledge of applicable manufacturing processes
  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal and project management skills
  • Demonstrates excellent communication skills-verbal and written
  • Demonstrates ability to perform in a team environment

Preferred

  • Plastic part design and plastic injection molding experience
  • Small appliance design experience
  • Knowledge of PCB’s and micro-processor control
  • Knowledge of plastic films used in food packaging is a plus
  • Knowledge of high-volume manufacturing is a plus
  • Experience with overseas suppliers is a plus
