Deliveroo Engineering is split into a number of functional groups. This group focuses on providing a broad range of key services to the rest of engineering (and the wider company) to allow engineers to focus on making great products for the three sides of our marketplace, to ensure the company treats our customers data as securely they would expect and to deliver world class IT to our headquarters and in country teams

Team: Production engineering

Production Engineering is a group of software and infrastructure engineers focused on maturing the core capabilities of the production infrastructure within Deliveroo. We’re fully committed to an operations free environment working on the production engineering model championed by Facebook and others. We are targeting 4 key areas of growth in 2021:

• Reliability and scalability: The largest of our focus areas tackles improvements across our infrastructure to ensure the day to day stability and future capacity or our key services to our customers. We maintain specialisms in AWS technologies particularly around ECS operation large docker clusters, the deployment and infra as code technologies (particularly terraform), monitoring with datadog, health guidance and support for core backend data services from RDs and Aurora through to Redis and dynamodb, we focus on supporting teams scaling key services and persistent data store as well as owning processes like company’s reliability lifecycle and blameless review.
• Developer effectiveness: Focusing on the needs of our growing development team to ensure they are able to land more code, faster with less risk each month whilst hitting fewer obstacles, delays and interruptions. In short, we want to make it a joy to develop , test, debug and land code here and ensure their on call rota are healthy, surfacing high value signals early.
• Security operations: Working with our Infosec partners as our key customer this is the platform team working on continual improvement of our platform security and practises. Work includes technologies like just in time access, improvements to system hardening, inter service trust maturing and all of the usual security controls across our platforms.
• Cost and performance optimisation: As we grow the cost of our infrastructure and partner services does as well. This small group will focus on ensuring we maximise our spend through our partners both through optimisation of use, strong commercial understanding as well as driving adoption of design patterns such as load shifting traffic from busy times, improvements to dynamic scaling and encouraging serverless workloads where appropriate.

You will spend time:

• Supporting, coaching and developing the infrastructure engineers you support whilst holding a high bar for performance and quality.
• Contributing to and facilitating the team defining high impact quarterly objectives and outcomes.
• Working with engineering leads to deliver against those objectives predictably, at pace, working to enable and unblock the team then celebrate success.
• Create a learning environment for your team and act as a mentor for engineers and up and coming leaders
• Become instrumental in improving and implementing processes and values that scale effectively
• Collaborate with cross functional teams including product, design, operations
• Work as part of the leadership team to shape the engineering org and its behaviours

Requirements:

• Demonstrable experience of delivering, operating and managing reliability of large scale infrastructure environments
• You have been a software engineer with a passionate eye on your user needs and experiences
• Experience of line management responsibilities in a fast paced environment with a focus on iterative delivery and engineer growth.
• Your style is collaborative and supportive, to encourage your team to continually optimise practises
• You set goals and objectives and offer advice, setting your team up for success
• You’re a natural recruiter, passionate about building your team
