Description: Perform accounting, reporting and financial analysis as assigned for the enterprise. This role is responsible for complex and multi-functional areas of accounting, maintaining proper accounting and financial control through reconciliations and analytical analysis related to assigned functional areas. Actively participate and ensure timely and accurate financial statement reporting for Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP), tax and other regulatory reporting. Conduct independent accounting-based research and complex analytical projects. Supports internal and external audits of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Washington and its subsidiaries. Develop and maintain working relationships with operational departments and external vendors. May supervise accounting staff. Supports the budget process. If assigned to work on federal contracts, this role may be required to undergo and pass a security background clearance per federal government regulations. Essential Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for preparing accurate and timely financial statement reporting for GAAP, SAP, tax and other regulatory reporting. Participates in the preparation of the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for the enterprise in consolidated and stand-alone reporting formats, including the compilation and distribution to internal and external audiences. Responsible to identify and clearly communicate, in writing and verbally, the impact of business decisions on the financial statements. Provide balance sheet and/or income statement analysis. Investigate and communicate budget variances, actual month-to-month or other comparative differences. Responsible for accounting of more complex areas of cash, investments, accounts receivable, inventory, property, claims & IBNR, post-retirement liabilities, debt, revenue, expenses, leases, grants, taxes or other related subjects as assigned. Supports the annual budget process by providing data and analysis for planning and forecasti
  • Maintain financial control by preparing timely and accurate financial reconciliations of more complex areas and related financial transactions. Identifies outstanding issues and resolves through independent analysis, research and follow-up. Reviews work product of accounting staff to ensure workpapers contain adequate evidence to support reconciliation and complies with policy requirements.
  • Participates in internal and external audits of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Washington and its subsidiaries. Ensures accounting procedures comply with GAAP and SAP accounting standards, internal controls and/or other regulatory reporting requirements. May serve as a technical or content expert resource.
  • Support management and other activities assigned, which may include ad hoc projects, complex analysis, process improvements, or representation of Financial Operations on other division, enterprise-wide or strategic initiatives. Develop and maintain working relationships with operational departments including Membership, Patient Financial Services, Claims, Provider Relations & Contracting, Human Resources, Treasury, Legal, Audit Services, Pharmacy, IS, Purchasing, and Actuary & Underwriting.
  • Performs more complex monthly journal entries and supports the monthly Close process. Includes writing and maintaining documentation on assigned journal entries and other Close procedures. Reviews, analyzes and may approve accounting entries posted to the general ledger and other sub-ledgers to ensure proper recording of assets, liabilities, revenue, expenses and/or equity.
  • Basic Qualifications: Experience
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience in an accounting and financial reporting setting.
  • Education
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field OR four (4) years of experience in a directly related field.

  • Demonstrated broad-based knowledge of GAAP, thorough understanding of accounting cycle and compile a full set of financial statements.
  • Working knowledge of complex financial transaction flow within operational and financial systems.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Thinks independently, provides leadership to staff accountants, acts decisively and self-directed.
  • Excellent verbal, written and presentation communication skills.
  • Proven analytical ability working with complex matters, excellent customer service and organizational skills.
  • Identifies and solves complex problems.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Five (5) years of accounting and financial reporting experience within a large health care or insurance industry setting.
  • Master's degree in accounting or a related field preferred.
  • CPA license by date of hire/transfer.
  • All minimum requirements plus: Advanced knowledge of accounting and financial reporting; GAAP and SAP.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and Enterprise Resources Planning (ERP) systems.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Knowledge of health care and insurance industry regulations.
