Job Description

The Editorial Assistant assists two Executive Editors with general administrative support, manages the production process of all titles, and edits manuscripts for supervisors. Dutton is a boutique imprint that publishes both fiction and nonfiction bestselling authors, including Sean Carroll, Alex Kershaw, Carl Zimmer, Martin Dugard, Daniel J. Levitin, Craig Unger, Abi Dare, Luke Barr, Roxanne Gay, Adam Makos, Andre Iguodala and Fiona Davis, among many others.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides administrative support, including completing expense reports, scheduling appointments, answering the telephone, and maintaining an organized filing system.
  • Evaluates submissions and drafts rejections.
  • Tracks contracts, payments, and transmits and tracks manuscripts. Manages the production process.
  • Writes promotional copy for all projects including title information sheets, flap copy, catalog copy, and online descriptive copy.
  • Prepares material for sales, marketing, and art meetings.
  • Requests author photos, fields questions from authors and agents, and prepares illustration logs.
  • Edits manuscripts for and in conjunction with supervisor.

Requirements:

  • Previous office experience
  • Strong organization, attention to detail, and follow-up skills
  • Proven ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities and multi-task
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work well independently and as part of a team
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and the Chicago Manual of Style
  • Familiarity with Facebook, Twitter, and other social networking platforms

Preferred Qualifications, if any:

Strong interest in serious nonfiction such as science, technology, economics, and history

One year of office experience preferred
