The Berkley imprint at Penguin Random House is seeking two Editorial Assistants to join their team. One Assistant will support an Executive Editor and a Senior Editor on an exciting list of suspense, thrillers and women’s commercial and bookclub fiction. The other Assistant will also support an Executive Editor and a Senior Editor on an impressive list of genre fiction, especially women’s fiction and romance.

Working with authors, agents, and various internal departments, the two Assistants will provide editorial and administrative support, and will play an important role in keeping track of the production process from manuscript to finished bound book.

These positions provide the opportunity to learn about the overall editorial process and the inner workings of a publishing office as well as the opportunity for growth. If you are an organized multi-tasker, take pride in being detail oriented and meeting deadlines and are a creative self-starter with an interest in book publishing then this is the role for you!

Specific responsibilities include:

  1. Communicating between authors, literary agents, and various internal departments to coordinate and keep track of the production process from final manuscript to finished bound book, including the trafficking of copyedited manuscripts, typeset page proofs and corrections, advanced reader copy, cover copy and cover mechanicals.
  2. Writing promotional copy, including online retail copy and book cover copy for supervisors’ approval
  3. Maintaining metadata for both editors’ titles.
  4. Managing campaigns for endorsement quotes on various titles, including trafficking electronic and print mailings and drafting pitch letters.
  5. Preparing and routing profit & loss statements, author sales history, and contract information sheets for acquisitions.
  6. Evaluating manuscripts in conjunction with supervisors and writing reader reports.
  7. Learning the editorial development of manuscripts in conjunction with supervisors.
  8. Providing general administrative support by taking messages, scheduling meetings, prepping for department meetings, managing expense reports, archiving, maintaining electronic files, etc.

Please apply if you meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Prior office experience strongly preferred
  • Genuine interest in commercial fiction
  • Excellent writing skills, especially in writing promotional copy
  • Superb organizational skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Proven ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities and to multitask
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel
