Job Summary

Reporting to our Global Communications Director, you will be a member of our core communications team and will help raise the profile of the Institute, position our experts as thought-leaders, and advance our messages and program goals. You will be responsible for producing a variety of written content, maintaining WRI’s external voice and tone, and identifying opportunities to publish content in the media and external outlets. You will also propose, develop, write and edit commentaries and opinion pieces with WRI’s leadership and senior staff, as well as for other products, such as marketing materials, graphics, funding proposals, and WRI’s annual report.
You will follow trends and news topics related to WRI’s issues to enhance the institute’s relevance and influence. The position requires someone who can turn rough ideas and technical language into compelling prose. You will work closely with other members of the Communications team to develop and edit content for WRI’s website and flagship blog (Insights).
This position is ideal for someone who is a creative, sharp writer and talented editor, with a passion for the environment and/or international development issues.
Job Responsibilities
  • Write and edit a variety of materials, including op eds, articles, reports, marketing materials, and more
  • Write and edit content for WRI’s website and blog
  • Help manage and refine WRI’s external editorial voice and manage workflow
  • Identify emerging opportunities by monitoring news coverage and working with staff to connect WRI’s issues to the external world
  • Support other writing, as needed, including to internal stakeholders, Board of Directors, and more
  • Maintain WRI’s Editorial Style Guide and conduct trainings to build writing capacity and support other colleagues
Job Qualifications
  • Minimum of 7 years of full-time professional experience as a writer and/or editor at a professional news organization, media outlet or equivalent, with 3 additional years in a leadership role
  • Master's degree in journalism, international relations, or related field (or bachelor's degree with an additional 2 years of relevant work experience)
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, with demonstrated success at translating rough and complex issues into engaging and artful prose
  • Proven track record publishing commentaries and articles on leading media outlets
  • Superlative organizational skills and understanding of how to juggle multiple projects
  • Understanding of environmental, international development, and sustainability issues with a commitment to advancing these issues
  • Experience working internationally or understanding of how to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others and flexibility in approaches
  • Ability to deliver under high pressure, preferably with enthusiasm and a good sense of humor
  • Additional language skills not required but preferred
  • US work authorization is required for this opportunity.

Potential Salary: $96,000 - $130,000. Salary is commensurate with experience and other compensable factors. How to Apply
