The Role
You are an experienced infrastructure automation engineer with significant production operations experience. You understand from experience how to build and nurture high performing engineering teams, establish agile and lean practices, and create a data-driven culture.
You understand the full lifecycle of the software delivery process and have excellent communication skills. You are the interface for stakeholders to the SRE team and can effectively manage competing priorities. You are able to represent new capabilities built or supported by the SRE team to the wider development organisation to promote adoption. You strive to reduce the number of distractions and interruptions the SRE team has. You can effectively facilitate planning for upcoming work so that it is sufficiently well defined and stakeholders have appropriate expectations.
As an automation engineer and a leader of a site reliability engineering team, you strive to reduce toil and automate as much as possible. Aiming to provide a self-service model for the development teams that depend on you. You are passionate about continuous improvement, unrelenting in identifying and addressing things that slow teams down or reduce their ability to deliver high-quality software● Assume line management responsibility for a SRE team within our Dublin-based engineering organisation.
● Facilitate team ceremonies and ways of working, continuously seeking to improve our practices in the pursuit of high team performance.
● Perform annual review and goal setting activities within an existing framework.
● Establish correlation between individual goals and organisational objectives.
● Attribute individual impact on organisational objectives.
● Hire world-class SRE engineering talent.
● Manage the on-call rota and associated incident management process making sure that it is sustainable and continuously improving.
● Build alignment and foster collaboration across Viasat sites and business units.
● Be a contributor to software architecture and champion technical best practices to help staff to drive the successful delivery of our products.
● Ensure that every product and service has appropriate levels of monitoring, well-defined metrics, and alerts.
● Manage costs and capacity of our cloud environments.
● Measure and report on key team metrics reflecting the objectives of the engineering organisation. Specifically:
● Lead time.
● Release frequency.
● Mean time to restore.
● Change failure frequency.
● Foster a culture of creativity, collaboration, speed, innovation, excellence, and a fun working environment.
Requirements● A degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or related field or equivalent practical hands-on experience
● Proven experience in software management.
● Direct production operations experience in a cloud environment.
● Experience working with container technologies.
● Experience working with infrastructure as code.
● Experience working with monitoring technologies.
● Experience contributing to technology and product strategy.
● Proven experience with hiring, team building, and personnel management including staff, contractors, and vendors.
● Experience leading capability building initiatives across diverse areas such as infrastructure and operations automation, software quality, delivery automation, and other core engineering capabilities.
● Demonstrated experience in driving operational efficiency and transparency of a growing engineering organization.
