Visiting Research Scientist, Computational Cameras and Displays

Facebook Reality Labs | Redmond, WA

Facebook Reality Labs is seeking a Visiting Research Scientist to join the Display Systems Research (DSR) team at FRL, whose work spans VR headsets, new types of computational displays, complex experimental systems, and AI-driven graphics. Individuals in this role are expected to be recognized experts in computational imaging/photography. Term length will be considered on a case-by-case basis and is often fulfilled during a faculty leave of absence or sabbatical term.

Responsibilities
  • Conceive and develop novel approaches for 3D acquisition and display that can be applied to virtual and augmented reality systems and subsystems, such as displays
  • Collaborate with team members to implement proof-of-concept prototypes that redefine the state-of-the-art in virtual and augmented reality
  • Contribute research to grow expertise within Facebook/Oculus and the wider industry through demos and publications
Minimum Qualifications
  • A PhD degree in Computer Science, Optical Science, Electrical Engineering, or related fields
  • Currently holding a faculty position with intention of returning after conclusion of contract
  • Publications demonstrating contributions to areas such as computational cameras and displays, scene reconstruction, compressive sensing, phase retrieval, and related topics
  • 5+ years experience with scientific programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, or similar
  • Work demonstrating cross-group and cross-culture collaboration
  • Proven track record of achieving significant results, as demonstrated by grants, fellowships, patents, or first-authored publications at leading conferences and journals (e.g., SIGGRAPH, CVPR, OSA, and SPIE)
  • Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in adjacent optics and rendering topics, including holography and light transport simulations
  • Experience mentoring junior researchers within academic or industrial organizations
  • Experience with modern deep learning frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow or PyTorch)
