Sr. Director - Special Assets & Loan Workout - Commercial Real Estate

Title: Sr. Director, Special Assets

Summary:
Capital One is seeking a strategic and tactical leader to provide loan workout expertise and domain expertise across the Commercial Real Estate business. The candidate will be a thought leader and innovator in avoiding losses or trading out of positions. S/he will perform the duties of a lending officer and be responsible for the restructuring / loss mitigation of poor performing loans. S/he will be capable of leading a class of creditors in a lead agent capacity. S/he will have experience in DIP lending (debtor in possession), deep knowledge of bankruptcy procedures and costs, legal documentation, and restructuring strategies for operating companies and Commercial Real Estate loans. The candidate will utilize his or her expertise in Special Assets to ensure Capital One is leveraging the best practices of its peers and proactively evolving the policies and programs employed by the Bank. This person will be capable of working closely with and influencing senior business and risk management leaders within the Commercial Bank when creating, revising or implementing special assets workout strategies.
Primary Responsibilities:
- A solid track record of influencing others, building partnerships and fostering a culture of collaboration is essential
- Skilled in gaining confidence and building trusting relationships with the most senior line of business executives
- Lead aggressive and comprehensive workout strategy to ensure optimal loss protection to the Bank in terms of both time and money while maintaining compliance with regulatory requirements
- Negotiates and contracts with various professionals such as attorneys, appraisers, brokers, etc. to provide services of significant cost to ensure best cost/benefit return to Bank
- Evaluates financial information, collateral, legal documentation and other available information to project probable and maximum loss exposure to Bank
- Strong people leadership experience is necessary to leverage not only the capabilities of peers and business partners, but also associates
- Proactively seeks to improve processes and implement best in class solutions, raising quality and productivity in a calculated way
- Lead criticized and watch list internal governance process. Ensure compliance with all reporting and regulatory requirements
- Create a culture of sharing lessons learned within Special Assets and back to the origination functions in order to avoid future mistakes
- Benchmarks own performance against industry best practices
- Acts as credit officer on a portfolio of consulting relationships with other departments

Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or Military experience
- At least 8 years of workout experience
- At least 5 years of experience in people leadership
Preferred Qualifications:
- MBA or JD degree
- At least 12 years’ experience in commercial lending, bank legal counsel or turnaround consulting
- At least 10 years of workout experience
- At least 8 years of experience in people leadership
- At least 10 years portfolio management or underwriting experience
