Research Scientist, Wearable Haptic Displays (PhD)

At Facebook Reality Labs (FRL) our goal is to explore, innovate, and design novel interfaces and hardware subsystems for the next generation of augmented, virtual, and mixed-reality experiences. We are looking for a skilled and motivated Wearable Haptic Displays Research Scientist to join our team, whose mission is to work with a broad range of multidisciplinary research to advance the state of the art for wearable haptic displays focusing on mixed reality interaction. We are specifically looking for a candidate with excellent mechanical, mechatronic, software, and engineering skills, and breadth in areas related to mixed-reality interaction. The chosen candidate will work with a diverse and highly interdisciplinary team of researchers, designers, and engineers, and will have access to cutting edge technology, resources, and testing facilities. • Frame, scope, plan, and execute, wearable haptic displays research and development
• Work with researchers, designers, engineers, and other roles, to enable AR/VR interaction demos to test critical hypotheses
• Connect and drive collaborations with academic/industry labs to advance research in relevant areas

• Must obtain work authorization in the country of employment at the time of hire and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment
• Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining, a PhD in the field of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, or other field related to wearable haptic displays
• Interpersonal experience: cross-group and cross-culture collaboration
• 5+ years experience with mechanical design, mechatronics, software engineering, and proficiency with standard tools in these areas: SolidWorks, C/C++, MATLAB, Python
• 5+ years experience designing wearable haptic displays co-optimizing human-coupled objectives, actuators, sensors, electronics/firmware, control systems, and user interaction design
• Track record of achieving results, including first-authored conference/journal publications or public presentations

• Familiarity with game engines such as Unity/Unreal
• Familiarity with state estimation, machine learning, and computer vision, especially applied to hand tracking
• Familiarity with haptic SWE rendering haptic/audio rendering algorithms and software
• Familiarity with psychophysics and running user studies
• Familiarity with novel AR/VR-specific human-computer-interaction paradigms
