Reporting to the CTO, the Chief Architect plays an integral role in leading the effort to build the company's multi-year technology strategy, roadmap, and processes. The Chief Architect will be part of the company’s senior management team responsible for development and technology innovation. The chief architect will guide the integration of Shutterfly’s brands into one cohesive platform and set of services to deliver delight at scale to our millions of customs around the world.

Responsibilities:

  • Define and drive architecture standards across the Shutterfly Inc. platform. Advise local architects, Product, SRE, Engineering leads and Quality on the alignment of solution implementations conforming to evolving standards.
  • Owns the Technology Roadmap and works closely with business, architects and engineering heads to set priority, deliver on-time, within budget and of high quality.
  • This senior management position will lead engineering teams to develop innovative solutions that meet market needs with respect to functionality, performance, scalability, reliability, implementation schedules, and adherence to develop goals and principles
  • Evangelize the capabilities of the platform and product end-to-end, both internally and externally and partner with the business to not only tell the platform story, but to inform and evolve our vision.
  • Drive and understand use cases for current and future architectural requirements across all product lines. Drive the evolution of Shutterfly’s technology stack, to maintain and enhance Shutterfly’s leadership role.
  • Act as a role model and mentor for the entire technology organization. Lead the domain and functional architects to achieve architectural initiatives.
  • Chairs the Architectural Committee consisting of the team of architects to achieve enterprise-wide architectural alignment, work towards devising architectural solutions, and chairing architectural design reviews.

  • Skilled in influencing and engaging 360 – own team, peers, cross-functional leaders and executives
  • Strong verbal, presentation and written communications skills
  • Proven ability to navigate ambiguity and collaborate with other functional leaders to provide positive outcomes

Technical Requirements:

  • 12+ years of experience as a software developer, lead and architect
  • At least 6 years’ experience as a software architect at a consumer services company delivering solutions running in Cloud infrastructure, preferably AWS.
  • Experience with large scale e-commerce platforms and highly available distributed systems
  • Deep experience architecting and scaling 24x7 business to consumer services
  • Demonstrated experience leading the development of complex web applications (Java, LAMP, C#, Memcache, MongoDB, Oracle, MySQL, Hadoop, iOS, HTML5). Required to have experience designing and deploying consumer-facing applications
  • Experience in Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence
  • Expert knowledge of technical architecture best practices
  • Solid experience in: MemCache, MongoDB, Hadoop, big data, message queuing
  • Developed architectures in multiple diverse domains and application stacks
  • Has experience on Enterprise-wide architecture governance boards
