Job Description

Job description

Pipeline & Staffing manager will work closely with Americas PEG Partners/Principals and the PEG Chief Commercial Officer and RPL to track and actively manage the PEG ringfence (RF) pipeline, identify and manage multi-bidder situations, and allocate casework to offices. The manager will focus on allocation of resources against the highest value commercial opportunities, maintaining a high level of RF team utilization, while optimizing for professional development of L1 PEG affiliates. Critical to the role is the ability to maintain a real-time view of the pipeline and to make quick, informed and balanced resource allocation decisions, while navigating and deftly managing the priorities (sometimes competing) of account heads on behalf of their clients, affiliates, and the overall Bain system. The role is full-time and permanent, and targeted towards an outstanding experienced professional who has demonstrated success in industry or consulting.

Responsibilities

Americas PEG Due Diligence pipeline management:

  • Track and manage the DD case pipeline by decoding, understanding and appropriately handling the hundreds of emails that come from PEG affiliated Partners, Principals and Managers daily that contain deal pipeline information from clients. Keep the pipeline data accurate and real-time on an ongoing basis as pipeline information changes.
  • Draw conclusions about timeline, stage-gates, likelihood, and staffing requirements from these emails and conversations. Maintain a real-time view on each opportunity’s likelihood and next steps.
  • Identify and track multi-bidder (MB) situations as they arise
  • Facilitate the DD Pipeline portion of the Americas PEG weekly Partner/Manager call
  • Monitor price realization and raise to the CCO when pricing is not at full PEG rates or duration is shorter than minimum guidelines
  • Use judgment and experience to estimate risks of becoming oversold; proactively flag concerns and recommend potential changes to pipeline and capacity management (different selling guidance, whether some cases may need to be turned away and which ones, need for additional capacity, etc.)

Staffing and resource allocation for 15-20 teams per week across North America:

  • Work collaboratively with RF leads in each office to track PEG RF capacity over the long term and specifically each week; ensure vacations and training schedules are managed and factored in so there are no surprises; work with the CCO and prompt the local RF leads when a shortage is likely
  • Optimize potential staffing placements on an ongoing basis. Maintain and adjust an overall hypothesis that combines the likelihood of cases selling with the available teams to enable the best-possible outcomes for the overall portfolio of cases and people. Make recommendations to the CCO on placements based on industry preferences of the local teams available, promotion considerations, multibidder constraints, life-balance considerations, and strength of teams.
  • Scenario plan: understand and take into account the ways the pipeline, MB, and staffing decisions relate to each other – recognize implications and recommend possible solutions where there are trade-offs that will impact each other.
  • Allocate RF casework to offices, working closely with PEG RF leads in each Americas office to track local RF team capacity and provide visibility into the relevant potential cases (while maintaining strict confidentiality on opportunities)
  • Identify situations when we may be oversold and work with NA operations to understand ability to surge teams into PEG; understand viability of those teams
  • Coordinate with South America, European, and Asian PEG staffing to facilitate cross border deal staffing and to manage capacity when utilization is high
  • Help identify opportunities to substitute alternative resources (e.g., off-shore and Advanced Analytics), track capacity/demand for these resources
  • Provide guidance to PEG Partners on appropriate team configurations and pricing
  • Coach PEG Partners on client communications to set/manage expectations regarding case staffing

Multibidder expert process management:

  • Develop and maintain a database of experts by topic and target company for all deals that enter the multi-bidder pipeline (over half the leads)
  • Identify and allocate experts to MB trees with support and input from industry vertical leads, balancing the various needs that come from client mapping, client prioritization, and staffing implications
  • Help solve and streamline cross-regional MB situations as they arise

Support PEG people strategy:

  • Work closely with Americas PEG Talent Manager, the CCO+RPL and local RF leads to understand professional development of PEG L1 Partner/Principal affiliates, PEG L2 affiliates that focus on diligence, and Managers for consideration in staffing/allocation decisions (individual strengths, interests and prior case work, development opportunities, personalities, etc.)

Additional ad-hoc support:

  • Contribute knowledge, experience and ideas to Call-to-Cash system development, specifically integrating the MB expert database
  • Input on RF staffing needs in annual planning process
  • Track client investment (pricing discounts and team resources)

Capabilities

  • Demonstrated experience acting as a trusted advisor to management regarding senior-level professional development
  • Strong analytic and critical thinking capabilities
    • Ability to use data to generate insights and recommend actions
    • Ability and confidence to make quick decisions while managing the competing priorities of senior leadership and account heads, keeping what is best for our clients front and center at all times
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and project management skills
    • Professional and approachable, diplomatic
    • Excellent communications skills in all situations with stakeholders (partners, managers, practice team members, Americas leadership)
    • Ability to juggle multiple priorities and meet deadlines
    • Solid organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Sound judgment and discretion when dealing with highly confidential information
  • Ability to work productively both independently and as an integral member of various teams
  • Ability to interact calmly with employees (at all levels) in a fast paced environment, under pressure, remaining flexible, proactive, resourceful and efficient, with the highest levels of professionalism
  • Excellent organization skills to manage a large pipeline of cases, the staffing of 50+ teams across NA, and the preferences of our clients and affiliates (more than 150)
  • Ability to travel regionally (a few times per year)

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Substantial experience (10+ years) working in a professional services environment is highly desirable
  • Demonstrated experience acting as a trusted advisor to senior-level management
  • Demonstrated experience resolving complex problems and situations effectively
  • A deep understanding of Bain’s Private Equity business, our clients, and the teams that work in the practice
