DATA SCIENCE / MACHINE LEARNING INTERNSHIP

Role: Data Science / Machine Learning Internship

The Writing Tools team is looking for a highly motivated Machine Learning/Data Science intern who wants to use their knowledge and creativity to better the lives of millions of students. We conduct research and development in artificial intelligence to develop products that enable intuitive and personalized writing support for learners.

Technical Requirements:

Strong Python programming skills – you will be delivering production-quality code.
Experience implementing machine learning models from scratch.
Deep understanding of statistics and the machine learning pipeline.
Experience with exploratory data analysis.
Experience working with messy, real-world data.
Ability to think critically and work autonomously.

Logistical Requirements:

Currently pursuing a degree in a quantitative discipline from an accredited, four-year college or university.
Able to work in our beautiful office in San Francisco.
Have the ability to work for a continuous 12 weeks in the summer.
Be legally allowed to work in the US (US citizen, green card, or F1 student visa holder).

Nice to have:

Experience with natural language processing.
Previous exposure to AWS cloud computing infrastructure.
Familiarity with Python machine learning toolkits. SpaCy, Pandas, and Sci-Kit-Learn are a plus!
Experience with deep learning toolkits.

What project will you be working on:
The project will involve taking real-world data and applying natural language processing (NLP) techniques to it to produce some useful or interesting service. We are open to other relevant projects if there is a high interest on the part of the intern.
What skills will you gain in 12 weeks:

Fetching data from various sources
Exploring data to compute statistics and visualize to find interesting patterns
Cleaning the data to prepare it for processing
Preprocessing and encoding data to make it useful in modeling
Building machine learning models to learn patterns in data
Training and tuning machine learning models
Evaluating models using appropriate metrics
Sharing modeling results with other data scientists
(Possibly) shipping code to production
