Job Description

Job Description

The Iberia bureau is looking for an experienced correspondent to work on its “Hub”, a newly-created team that is in charge of the spot and multimedia file, speed and newsplanning and is central to its operations.

Spain has a dynamic and varied news file: anti-establishment forces that are rewriting the nation’s young democracy, an independence movement in Catalonia and a private sector that boasts three of the euro zone’s biggest banks, the world’s largest clothing retailer Inditex and telecom giant Telefonica. Spain is also exposed to Brexit in unique ways: it is home to more British retirees than any other European country and claims sovereignty over the British territory of Gibraltar. Spain’s economy is on the rebound and tourism is running at record levels, but the nation has very high rates of inequality and youth unemployment which pose long-term threats to its stability.

The successful candidate will be able to remain cool under pressure to regulate traffic in a busy newsroom and work seamlessly on different aspects of the file. She or he will be able to jump from alerts on domestic politics to corporate breaking news often spanning over several countries or colourful multimedia pieces to enhance our video or pictures file. She or he will have strong editing and communication skills and show an ability to work very closely with the Spanish service, visuals, EMEA editors and other bureaus in the region.

At least 5 years’ experience working for a newswire or in busy international news environments

Fluent Spanish is essential. Portuguese would be an advantage as the Portugal and Spain bureau are deeply integrated and the successful candidate will be helping out on Portugal stories as well.
