Data Governance - Program Manager Support Technology

Job Description

Our Support Technology team creates tools and experiences that connect our merchants with valuable information and impactful conversations with our Customer Success Representatives. There is currently no standard operating procedure for how data, created by these tools, is defined, documented and shared with our business stakeholders. Success in this role will involve the design, implementation and evolution of a governance program that ensures reliable data is centrally available to our business stakeholders. The Data Governance Program Manager will work with the Support Technology team to provide a framework for how data is generated, maintained, and shared within Shopify. They will work closely with Support Technology leadership, software developers and program managers and key representatives from the Data organization. In doing so, the Data Governance Program Manager will help ensure data integrity through design and implementation of a data governance process. The Data Governance Program Manager will own and represent a set of procedures that create a clear connection between Shopify’s Data organization (those that work with the data), Support Technology (tools that generate the data) and Support Operations (the business consuming the intelligence). The governance program should define a set of key principals, that when applied, will eliminate data/reporting duplication, inconsistencies, and ambiguity in data, reports, and dashboards created. The Data Governance Program Manager will be successful by applying industry best practices related to process design and data governance. The Data Governance Program Manager must have extensive experience in data governance in order to be successful in this role.

Responsibilities:

• Design and own the data governance process that addresses the success criteria listed above
• Influence stakeholders to adopt the process
• Educate stakeholders about governance best practices
• Balance Shopify’s appetite for process management with its needs
• Continuously evolve the governance process to meet Shopify’s needs

The governance process should result in:

• A data library that describes data and measures used in reports
• Ensure that data definitions are clear, descriptive, consistent, and in alignment with business requirements
• Generate a single source of reference for all data
• Improve data and reporting integrity

Requirements for the role:

• Must have extensive experience designing & managing a Data Governance program
• Track record as a proven data governance expert
• Have a proficient understanding of best practices in process design
• Strong communication & presentation skills
• Strong group facilitation skills
• Knowledge of database design

Bonus experience

• Experience with requirements gathering, steward of governance
• It would be beneficial to have familiarity with writing SQL code
• Experience with data visualization tools and best practices would be beneficial (Tableau, Power BI)
