About the Position

We’re excited to find a Site Reliability Engineer/Devops Engineer to occupy a position in the Trade Support team in Jane Street’s Hong Kong office.

This role gives you the opportunity to work with a team of 6-8 other Software and Support Engineers in a collaborative, intellectual environment with a strong focus on education, often teaching OCaml and finance to new hires with no prior experience with either.

The Trade Support team is crucial to the business at Jane Street: uniquely among the Tech teams, trading cannot happen without us present, and we have a key role in the expansion of the business into new markets and financial products.

On the trade-support team we split our time between shift work and project work.

• While on shift, we are responsible for live maintenance and support of the firm’s tech infrastructure: when the firm encounters unexpected technical obstacles to our trading, we will often be the first to notice and respond. This may just mean finding log files and correcting configuration errors, but in some cases it can mean making a rapid real-time judgement about whether it is safe for trading to continue, communicating quickly and clearly with Traders, Software Engineers, and/or external counter parties to keep everyone focused on a solution, and addressing unforeseen problems in creative but careful ways. The role carries the trust of Traders and Software Engineers across the firm, which allows and rewards both a sense of ownership and responsibility for immediate resolution of problems, and an eagerness to see them followed up and prevented in future
• When not on shift, members of Trade Support do project work. This means getting hands-on in streamlining the process of shift work by improving existing automation tools and writing new ones. Common solutions go through a life-cycle of being discovered, then documented, then scripted, then automated entirely, and it’s our project work that pushes each of these steps through. We work with Application Developer teams to make their systems more easily configured, monitored, and repaired, and continuously work on improving our capacity to support the business as it scales

About You

As a senior member of the team, in addition to hands-on engagement in the same duties listed above, you’ll keep a thoughtful and empathetic perspective on the functioning and collaboration of the team as a whole. You’ll have ideas for how we can communicate and coordinate better, and how we can develop, improve and spread our best practices. As you become more familiar with the project work we do, you’ll start to have a role in prioritizing and supervising sub-tasks of longer-term goals, ensuring progress the team makes is timely and transparent, and helping your colleagues situate their work within our broader strategic objectives. Past experience managing people will enable you to help people around you succeed and remove obstacles to their progress in their work and in their careers more broadly. Fluency in English required.
