Job Description Looking to make a difference innovating in disruptive technologies? FAST Labs is growing, and we are looking for a Machine Learning Scientist to develop advanced sensor exploitation algorithms through the application of cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and statistical signal processing methods.
As part of a team of researchers, software, and systems engineers, you will act as principal investigator (PI) or task lead on R&D projects involving machine learning, in collaboration with chief scientists. Your contributions will help develop new and existing customer relationships at DARPA, Air Force Research Lab (AFRL), Office of Naval Research (ONR), and the Intelligence Community (IC) in areas relating to challenging algorithm development applications. As PI, you will lead and execute the following:
  • Research techniques and solutions developed in-house, by or with universities, or published in scientific literature
  • Participate in external project interactions with customers, other companies, and academic institutions
  • Generate ideas for potential proposals and write technical sections of white papers and proposals
  • Lead/participate in the creation of prototypes (typically in MATLAB or Python) and design reviews
  • Design, develop, execute, and implement research projects involving complex sub-systems
  • Support demonstration and transition of new technology from R&D to BAE Systems’ business areas and customers
  • Deliver technical reporting, documentation, and support briefings for customers on technical concepts
  • Author/co-author external publications (conference or workshop papers/presentations, journal articles, and books) and/or invention disclosures as appropriate
Location
This position will be based out of our facility in renowned Research Triangle Park, NC. Relocation is available. Some travel is required for collaboration with customers and with staff across our US business areas and facilities. • Doctorate with research experience

  • US citizen or green card holder, with ability to get a SECRET clearance
  • Demonstrated written and oral communication and presentation skills
  • Commitment to inclusive teamwork and collaboration, as well as ability to work independently on hard problems
  • Track record of innovative research in AI/ML algorithms and technologies
  • Technically knowledgeable and experienced in two or more of the following domain areas:
    • Machine learning detection and classification
    • Real-time tracking
    • Fusion and exploitation of multimodal sensor data, including RF and acoustic sources
    • Deep learning, transfer learning, reinforcement learning, and/or active learning
    • High performance GPU computing
    • Autonomy and sensor tasking
    • Game theory
    • Natural language processing
    • Activity based intelligence, e.g. anomaly detection, patterns of life, behavior recognition
    • Time series data analysis
    • Bayesian methods
    • Reduced order modeling
    • Embedded analytics at the edge
    • Feature engineering and dimensionality reduction
Preferred Skills and Education
  • PhD degree in a technical field (EE, CS, OR, applied math or physics) with relevant thesis topic and 4+ years of relevant professional experience
  • Proficiency with software prototyping, problem decomposition, and analysis tools (e.g. MATLAB/Octave, Python, Java)
  • Experience leading multi-disciplinary technical teams and mentoring less experienced scientists
  • Software engineering with OOP paradigms, e.g. C++, C#, or Java, and programmatic data access, e.g. SQL
  • Experience with common deep learning frameworks, e.g. TensorFlow, PyTorch
  • Experience in computer vision and in analyzing GMTI, EO, IR, RF, FMV, WAMI, EW, satellite imagery
  • Parallel computing and algorithm acceleration or optimization, e.g. CUDA, OpenCL, MPI
  • Record of publications, patents, proposals, university collaborations, and/or involvement with professional societies will be viewed favorably
  • Active SECRET or higher clearance preferred
