Opportunities for Training and Development:

Monitoring and Reporting Pertinent Legislation Activity:

The Farmers Legislative Affairs Intern will be located in Sacramento and will be supervised by our California based Legislative Affairs team. Members of the California based Leg Affairs team have responsibility for bill tracking and advocacy efforts in California and 10 other western zone states. The intern will assist the team by helping to monitor pending legislation and by gathering daily news clips that are relevant to the legislation being tracked. The majority of the intern’s time will be focused on California legislation, but the intern will be expected to assist with efforts in other states as well. Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Monitor and track state legislation and prepare meaningful reports
  • Attend legislative hearings and prepare summaries of relevant testimony and committee actions
  • Review various forms of media to assemble relevant news stories that are of interest to the Farmers Employees and Agents Political Action Committee (FEAPAC) Members
  • Review Assembly and Senate Daily files and highlight activities at the Capitol that are of interest to the Legislative Affairs Manager and Director
  • Monitor insurance industry association conference calls and prepare notes and analysis

Event Coordination and Participation:

The Farmers Legislative Affairs Intern will be given the opportunity to help plan and participate in Legislative Affairs meetings and events with legislators and insurance advocacy industry leaders. This event coordination exposure will include:

  • Assist in planning for the California Farmers Legislative Conference, including: scheduling legislator meetings, preparing documents for distribution to the legislature, and other activities associated with the event
  • Attend and assist with Farmers Legislative Affairs meetings, briefings, tours and other events as assigned
  • Assist in planning FEAPAC Golf Tournaments in California and potentially other states as well

Internal Administrative Process:

The Farmers Legislative Affairs Intern will be trained on the internal administrative process within Farmers Legislative Affairs California and will be given exposure to the inner workings, organization and process flow of the Sacramento office.

Education and Abilities which Prepare a Candidate for this Opportunity Include:

  • University student enrolled in a political science/public policy major preferred.
  • Strong research skills including all methodologies; internet, publications, telephone, etc.
  • Superior writing and verbal communication skills.
  • High level of detail-orientation and strong data entry skills.
  • Excellent computer skills, including proficiency in Access, Excel, Outlook and Explorer.
