Job Summary Responsible for analysis of data related to particular lines of business. This position requires strong skills in quantitative analysis, communication (verbal and written), and business understanding, including the ability to identify trends and recommend changes to systems or processes that can improve results. Responsible for ad-hoc and recurring data extraction and analysis; also contributes to larger advanced analytical (data modeling) projects. Works closely with Claims leadership (managers, directors, and above) to deliver the necessary support and insight to improve decision-making. Essential Job Functions Analyze data to solve business problems: • Think critically about data required and possible analysis approaches to solve business problems • Understand and apply the scientific method (hypothesize, experiment/test, and learn) • Possess intermediate computation skills • Understand relational databases and how to extract and manipulate data using business query interfaces • Produce ad-hoc and recurring reports and analyses as assigned • Perform analysis using Excel, Access, and similar applications • Conduct Internet research as needed • Use standard statistical or business intelligence packages to perform analysis • Interpret results obtained from these packages • Effectively use graphical techniques to visually explore and present data • Understand statistical inference—its scope, limitations, and proper role in business analysis • Express generally posed business problems in a statistical context • Understand how to obtain a suitable sample from a population and how to make inferences from that sample • Apply commonly used analytic techniques to reveal insights from data. Communicate effectively: • Be concise and precise in written communication • Incorporate best practices in developing intuitive reports to share with a broad audience • Document approaches or unique aspects of data to aid understanding • Create impactful PowerPoint presentations to summarize results of analysis projects • Deliver presentations to business partners—effectively explain complicated concepts, analysis conclusions, and business implications. Understand insurance and business concepts: • Understand the business rules and business processes of multiple lines of business; • Apply understanding of the principles of management, accounting, finance, and marketing • Understand and apply the principles of optimization (seeking to maximize value given competing/scarce resources) • Demonstrate commitment to lifelong learning. Exemplify good teamwork: • Proactively communicate with customers and team members • Provide excellent customer service by making realistic commitments and keeping them • Work productively on assigned tasks • Collaborate effectively with other team members • Demonstrate accountability to management and customers for hours spent on assigned tasks • Diligently strive to deliver value in the fewest possible hours. Physical Actions • Essentially sedentary work consisting of occasional walking, standing, and lifting/carrying 10 lbs. maximum • Functional ability of seeing, hearing and speaking • Ability to type proficiently Physical Environment • Work in a climate-controlled office, with occasional travel by car or airplane Education Requirements High school diploma or equivalent required. Bachelor’s degree preferred. Completion of, or actively pursuing, a major insurance designation • (Preferred) Masters degree in related area (e.g. Statistics, Finance, Business Administration) Experience Requirements • Internal candidates: (Strongly preferred) 3+ years of Farmers claims experience plus 2+ years experience as a Business Analyst I • External candidates: 4+ years’ experience with business reporting and analysis—understanding a business problem, gathering requirements and data, applying quantitative and qualitative analysis techniques to the data, and sharing analysis/report results Special Skill Requirement • MS Excel: advanced proficiency (Pivot Tables, Pivot Charts, AutoFilter, and formulas) • BI query tools: advanced proficiency in querying and manipulating data (Cognos ReportNet, OBIEE Answers, Microsoft Access, or similar) • Quantitative analysis: proficient with descriptive statistics, data profiling, advanced data visualization techniques, and some advanced analysis methods (e.g. simulation, regression) STATISTICA experience is a plus • Business process: experience in claims handling/management; knowledge of relevant business rules and data associated with those rules • Farmers transactional systems: advanced understanding of workflow and data features arising from workflow and business rules • MS PowerPoint: proficient in creating logical, impactful presentations • Communication: professional, concise, and precise in both written and verbal communication Farmers is an equal opportunity employer, committed to the strength of a diverse workforce. ]]>
