LINUX System Engineer - III

Job Description

Rackspace is looking for a Software Developer with a Linux systems background to work on our Productivity Engineering Team. This team is responsible for the design, development, testing and deployment of a variety of messaging and big data systems. Our team members are full stack engineers which means you will be automating deployments to the Linux servers we manage as well as writing software.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY:

• Implementation of complex designs and development of large scale distributed systems

JOB COMPLEXITY:

• Ensure completeness and compatibility of the technical infrastructure to support system performance
• Keep informed of new technology
• Follow and execute Rackspace change management
• Participate in systems/code reviews and design sessions
• Facilitate Root Cause Analysis sessions
• Delivers brown bags/tech talks to internal groups
• Take full ownership of product life cycle

EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION:

• 2+ years of scripting language development experience (Python, Ruby, Perl, etc.)
• 2+ years Linux systems experience, including systems administration or engineering experience
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field preferred
• RHCE preferred

NICE TO HAVE KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITY:

• Linux programming experience beyond scripting using a language such as C or C++
• Familiarity with Internet email protocols (POP, IMAP, SMTP) and email architecture
• Experience using a configuration management system (Chef, Ansible, etc.)
• Experience working with a large-scale system (1000+ servers)
• Experience with relational databases (preferably MySQL)
• Experience with non-relational databases (preferably Redis, Cassandra and Solr)
• Experience with message brokers such as RabbitMQ or Kafka
• Experience with Linux logging services like Syslog-ng and Flume
• Web hosting experience using NGNIX or Apache
• Experience with Agile methodologies (Scrum, XP, Lean, Kanban, etc.)
• Familiarity with continuous integration and continuous deployment concepts
• Able to resolve problems in a timely manner and seek out guidance and knowledge when needed
• Beginning understanding of business impact
• Provide constructive feedback during systems/code reviews and design sessions
• Understands architectural principles (e.g. high availability, security, business continuity, etc)
