Job Description

What makes Gartner a GREAT fit for you? When you join Gartner, you’ll be part of a fast-growing team that helps the world become smarter and more connected. We’re the world’s leading research and advisory company, achieving consistent double-digit growth by steering clients toward the right decisions with business and technology insights they can’t find anywhere else. Our associates enjoy a collaborative work environment, exceptional training and career development — as well as unlimited growth opportunities. If you like working with a curious, supportive, high-performing team, Gartner is the place for you.

SENIOR RESEARCH ANALYST (location: New York City, Dallas)

The Gartner Research Board (GRB) is a division of Gartner dedicated to critically thinking about the strategic issues confronting technology executives at the world’s largest, most complex organizations (global companies and government agencies). Today, our clients - or “members” - face daunting challenges including disruption from startups, the rise of entirely new business models, geopolitical headwinds, and massive re-organizational efforts. The mission of the GRB is simple: to carry out the big picture, forward-looking conceptual thinking about such challenges that CIOs, CTOs, CISOs, and other technology executives faced with pressing strategic concerns do not always have the time or bandwidth to do.

As a Senior Research Analyst, you will be expected to lead two studies each year for technology infrastructure and architecture executives at RB member firms. You will work closely with a supporting research analyst and under the guidance of a research director, distilling findings from a variety of sources and presenting them in a way that is consumable for senior technology executives. Research topics reside on the cutting edge of technology agendas, meaning that RAs must exercise a free hand to explore questions for which there are no easy or rote answers.

Being an SRA at the GRB is not a backend position: you will be directly engaging with executives at global Fortune 500 (in many cases F50, or F10) companies as well as other highly influential thinkers and leaders. We place this high level of trust in our associates and expect them to rise to the challenge. You’ll be successful at the GRB if you are creative and curious; an independent thinker and a team player; a fast learner and a great writer. SRAs come from a spectrum of backgrounds, including public policy, economics, sociology, engineering, journalism, the sciences, and history. No matter what their background, a successful SRA is someone who loves to think critically and deeply.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the end-to-end delivery of strategic research studies including scoping the study, conducting research through research interviews with technology leaders and surveys of the GRB membership, creating research reports and other deliverables, developing and delivering presentations to senior executive audiences, and contributing to the design and execution of the GRB’s events and conferences.
  • Draw thoughtful conclusions from complex, mostly qualitative data from a cacophony of often-conflicting sources. Identify and collect the data you need to do so through a range of channels, including interviewing and surveying GRB members and speaking to key players throughout the broader technology ecosystem.
  • Propose and test insightful ideas through primary and secondary research and convey them in polished written, graphical, and verbal products. Aid in developing content and facilitating conversations that support our members’ most important initiatives.
  • Identify and connect with industry leaders, academics, and startup executives, both to conduct research interviews and to build our extensive set of ecosystem and thought-leader relationships.
  • Master research processes with an eye towards continuous innovation to ensure the GRB continues to provide world-class service.
  • Mentor and develop more junior research analysts by assigning them challenging work and developing their skills through regular feedback and coaching.

REQUIREMENTS

  • At least 5 years of demonstrated experience in a research or consultancy organization interacting with senior business leaders and conducting impactful research on issues relevant to them.
  • Knowledge of IT trends and market dynamics as well as experience with implementing or managing IT systems in large enterprises would be an advantage.
  • Strong project management skills and proven ability to execute complex projects successfully.
  • Excellent stakeholder management, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • B.A./B.S. degree. We look for candidates from all degree programs. (Technology background, higher degrees, or post-graduation work experience are welcomed, but not required.)
  • Excellent writing, reading, and critical thinking skills; interviewing and presentation skills are a plus. You’ll need to be comfortable working in small, collaborative teams in an iterative, fast-paced manner.
  • U.S. work authorization.
  • We welcome candidates from a diverse range of backgrounds and life experiences, and we encourage applicants from traditionally underrepresented groups to apply. Diversity and inclusion are core values at the GRB which we strive for in our hiring processes and work environment.

We Offer

  • Direct, in-person interaction with our membership of senior executives from Fortune Global 500 companies and government agencies. You’ll gain a view into how these executives are addressing their most challenging questions, and develop the skills needed to communicate at an executive level.
  • Opportunity to meet and engage with key thinkers in technology companies, Silicon Valley startups, academia, consulting groups, and venture capital firms.
  • A highly intellectual, trusting, and fun (!) work environment with colleagues who are well-rounded and deeply curious.
  • A culture dedicated to learning and continuous improvement, ranging from professional presentation classes to structured feedback and one-on-one coaching and mentorship.
  • Domestic and international travel opportunities.
