Job Description

The VP of Core Media Software Engineering responsibilities include the overall leadership to the specific project plans, administrative, and logistical oversight to Disney Streaming Service’s Core Media Processing and Packaging engineers. This position will provide day-to-day oversight to personnel within the software development teams, maintaining and communicating schedules, overseeing release deployments and issuing communications internal and external to the department.A successful candidate must have deep knowledge acquiring and understanding media product requirements at an expert level, managing teams to execute on variable length and overlapping projects with tight deadlines while collaborating on architecture that impacts Core Media and other adjacent engineering teams outside the department.This role will be dependent on interacting with a long list of teams including the department’s own Technology team as well as teams from Media Product, Engineering, Infrastructure, Operations and Leadership throughout the course of planning, development and support of all the Core Media products including but limited to xCoder, SV3 and Ad Station across all of DSS’s partner environments. The role also involves being responsive and supporting our businesses live operation needs, triaging when necessary and bringing in appropriate response teams.
  • 15+ years of relevant media experience with experience in DTC subscriber models
  • Managing >100 media engineers across many geographies
  • Excellent planning skills while meeting objectives without perfect information.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Very strong problem-solving skills and the ability to learn fast, identify and resolve issues
  • Able to balance multiple priorities simultaneously without sacrificing quality
  • Strong analytical and presentation skills needed to communicate to a wide audience
  • Possess a deep memory for details both big and small to guide toward a larger strategy
  • Deliverable-focused, strong work ethic and able to prioritize on a variety of levels
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience with incredibly deep media streaming knowledge
The Core Media Department defines and develops media processing and packaging solutions that are essential to our business powering our live-event, linear and on-demand streams. These include the likes of ESPN+, MLB, Hulu, Disney+ and others.
Core Media currently consists of two development teams, Processing and Packaging & Ad Services, and a dedicated QA team supporting the two respective engineering teams. The department is responsible for the media processing, encoding, packaging and services for live and VOD partners and internal operation teams. The Processing team primarily owns the preparation and transcoding of media through a solution they developed called xCoder. The Packaging & Services team develops solutions that includes the Segmenter, Preset Microservice, Ad Servlets, Ad Station, Subtitle Tools, Master Playlist Service, Filmstrip Creator, and Composite Playlist Service. The QA team is dedicated to supporting the Core Media department's development efforts although QA does not directly report into the Core Media’s organization from a personnel standpoint. Core Media’s solutions are used within DSS live production environments and as such the department often provides support to real-time operational needs.
The Core Media department is reorganizing to bring the development teams together under a new VP of Core Media Software Engineering.Within the department, this VP will work alongside the VP of Core Media Technology and report to the VP of Core Media The current department is distributed across five domestic locations.
Required Education :
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience with incredibly deep media streaming knowledge
