Job Description This position can be located at any of the four main P&S Combat Vehicle locations: York,PA, Sterling Heights,MI, San Jose,CA or Minneapolis,MN.
The M109A7/M992A3 Electrical IPT Lead manages the electrical subsystem design technical and execution scope by leading the Electrical Integrated Product Team (IPT) and is accountable for the IPT’s overall technical, cost, and schedule performance. The Electrical IPT consists of electrical and mechanical engineers and designers primarily located in York, PA but has support staff at other CV sites and at supplier locations across the US.
The electrical subsystems provide electrical power generation, distribution, and management to the vehicles. Major components within the electrical subsystems include a high-voltage generator, generator controller/inverter, bi-directional DC-DC power converters, high-voltage distribution box, hull-to-cab transition cable management system, vehicle batteries, electrical wiring harnesses, driver’s switch panel, cab drives control box, vehicle navigation components, and associated hardware and mounting provisions. The electrical subsystems must comply with applicable power quality standards, EMI/EMC, signal integrity, maintainability, and other relevant military standards and requirements.
The M109A7/M992A3 vehicles are currently in production and major design tasks will include Sustainment Technical Support (STS) efforts, planned and unplanned Obsolescence, Engineering Support in Production (ESIP), and new design scope expected as a part of Extended Range Cannon Artillery (ERCA) improvement efforts.
The candidate should be highly self-motivated, have strong analytical and creative problem-solving abilities, as well as solid communication and interpersonal skills. The ability to collaborate within a multi-disciplinary engineering team is critical in order to field and support this Combat Vehicle Program.
Position Responsibilities:
  • Manages engineering design, development, analysis, test, production support, and product assurance of all assigned projects to meet cost, quality, performance, and schedule requirements.
  • Develops, implements, and manages project plans to include detailed task definition, resource requirements, schedule, quality, and cost parameters. Assesses project risk areas and develops risk mitigation plans. Prepares, monitors, and controls budgets and schedules, reporting on technical, cost, and schedule status.
  • Determines and guides the technical approaches and architectures used for projects.
  • Conceptualizes, creates, and analyzes designs to ensure technical outcomes are consistent with customer and company requirements.
  • Applies knowledge of multiple engineering principles and disciplines, including customer understanding as well as in-depth knowledge of assigned product or technology area in guiding and reviewing project direction and outcomes. Resolves conflicts between individual subsystems or disciplines to the benefit of system performance, quality, reliability, and cost.
  • Plans and manages internal and external resources ensuring that all project obligations and objectives are met. This includes identifying and acquiring resources, providing project leadership, and anticipating and resolving inter/intragroup conflict.
  • Continuously strives to maintain and enhance the technical reputation of BAE Systems with customers and industry.
  • Regularly prepares, presents, and defends project technical results and recommendations to external customers and internal high-level management. Participates in formal technical reviews with customers and internal technical reviews with peers and subordinates.
  • Guides the preparation of assigned proposals, including responsibility for technical and cost content.
  • Ensures his/her team supports test sites and York manufacturing groups (floor support, ESIP, etc.), including support for Test Incident Report (TIR) and Failure Analysis Corrective Action Report (FACAR) processes.
  • Maintains state-of-the-art familiarity with industry practices, trends, and applications to enhance the organization’s technical capabilities. Advises senior management on new developments and evolving organizational needs and required technical competencies.
  • Maintains a safe work environment and ensures compliance with safety objectives and policies.
  • Shares responsibility of self-development with immediate supervisor.
Additional Responsibilities include:
  • Ensuring that the scope allocated to the M109A7/M992A3 Electrical IPT is rigorously executed to meet allocated functional, performance, and interface requirements within cost and schedule constraints.
  • On-time delivery of quality CDRL.
  • Coordinating and collaborating with teaming partners.
  • Ensuring that cross-IPT interfaces are managed and systems level requirements are met
  • Ensuring all Cybersecurity requirements are met within the Electrical domain
  • Ensuring process discipline and execution rigor during the project – follow BMS Procedures. Responsible for timely tailoring of process standards for use within the Electrical domain.
  • Managing Control Account(s) or Work Package(s); includes developing detailed execution plans from BOEs and budget allocations
  • Providing timely and accurate status reports and prompt notification of emerging risks & issues within his/her sphere of responsibility. Elevate as necessary to ensure management risk awareness.
  • Reviewing technical progress, evaluating and reporting results, and taking action as required
  • Providing staffing forecasts to both project management and functional management
  • Ensuring objective review, assessment, and verification of engineering work products within Electrical domain
  • Ensuring the Product Safety aspects of all sub-components, components, and deliverables within the Electrical domain
  • Providing clear, concise work direction to project personnel and communicating programmatic information to ensure in-context systems thinking
  • Providing to functional management objective and constructive inputs regarding performance objectives and performance for assigned project personnel
  • Taking Earned value and writing/presenting schedule/cost variances

Program Background: The M109A7/M992A3 program consists of the Self-Propelled Howitzer (SPH) and Carrier, Ammunition, Tracked (CAT) family of vehicles, an enhanced 155mm artillery system being manufactured by BAE Systems for the US Army. The vehicles are the latest upgrade to the Army's field artillery portfolio and incorporate sophisticated computing equipment, communications, sensors, driver's vision enhancer, position navigation system, and a comprehensive diagnostics computer. The family of vehicles feature cutting edge electrical power generation, distribution, and management components including a 70kW high-voltage power generation and distribution system, digital backbone architecture and a digital fire control system.
Typical Education & Experience Typically a Bachelor's Degree and 8 years work experience or equivalent experienceRequired Skills and Education
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and 8+ years electrical engineering experience
  • At least 2 or more years as a Project Engineer or equivalent with engineering supervisory experience
  • Practical knowledge and experience with applicable engineering processes to include process tailoring and process improvement
  • Vehicle electrical/electronics experience throughout the development lifecycle, including Logistics product technical support, and Supply Chain/Vendor Information Request (VIR) support.
  • Experience with power electronics, cabling design, and electrical power distribution components.
  • Experience managing subcontracts.
  • Technical leadership and management (i.e., project initiation, planning, execution, monitoring and control, closeout)
  • Working knowledge of Earned Value Management and Control Account Management duties
  • Exceptional communication (verbal and written) and collaboration skills
  • Significant experience in cross functional, cross discipline IPT development environments with emphasis on internal and external customer satisfaction
  • Ability to conduct effective meetings, discussions, and presentations
Preferred Skills and Education Preferred Skills:
  • Experience in high-voltage electrical power generation, distribution, management, safety design and training
  • Working knowledge of CMMI
  • Knowledge of leading Vetronics technologies and processes
