We are currently looking for a Software Developer Intern/Co-op to join Thales Canada Defence & Security in the Ottawa Office.

Term Start: May 2020

Duration 8 or 12 month work term

In order to qualify for this intern or co-op role, you must meet all of the following requirements:

  • Mandatory: Enrolled in good standing at an accredited Canadian university in a Bachelor’s degree program in software engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, engineering physics / engineering science, computer science, or equivalent education with relevant experience.
  • Able to work Full Time for the specified term lengths
  • Ability to obtain a NATO Secret security clearance;
  • Ability to meet the eligibility requirements outlined in the Canadian Controlled Goods Registration Program (including ITAR-controlled articles).
  • Software development expertise using at least one high-level programming language (such as C, C++, C#, Java, Python, etc.) is required.

Under the guidance of a senior software developer, the successful candidate will be responsible for the implementation, test, and documentation of a desktop, embedded, mobile, or web-based software application product. The specific product work assignment will be based on the successful candidate’s software domain experience and expertise.

The successful candidate is expected to:

  • Participate in requirements analysis and software design;
  • Implement software, including coding, unit testing, and integration;
  • Produce software developer documentation;
  • Identify and analyze software defects and implement fixes into product releases;
  • Team with other software developers, architects, and testers to build and support software applications including new product releases; and
  • Develop currency in software development best practices and methodologies.

The ideal candidate would have some exposure or knowledge in the following:

  • Very strong coding, unit testing, and debugging skills;
  • Experience developing software for one or more of the following domains:
    • Desktop;
    • Embedded;
    • Web-based; or
    • Mobile; and
  • Experience developing software for one or more of the following Operating Systems:
    • Windows; or
    • Linux.

Who is this offering open to?
Any female Canadian citizen or permanent resident enrolled in the final year of a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) program at participating universities across Canada are eligible to apply.
Selection Criteria
Candidates will be required to meet certain eligibility and selection criteria including:
• Be female
• Have Canadian citizenship or permanent residency in Canada
• Write a 300 word essay outlining their leadership potential
• Supply two references supporting their leadership abilities
• Have a minimum academic standing of 80% (as of their third year)
• Successful interview
How is the financial award paid out?
Each award recipient will receive $6,000 CAD after successfully completing their identified co-op/internship program.
