Job Description

Primary Responsibilities:

This position is for a manufacturing engineer to work with Collins Engineering and the supply base. This individual will perform technical evaluations and develop actions plans with a focus on driving supplier performance and business-wide metric improvement. The individual will work with supplier to develop and execute plans to address technical issues related to a supplier’s performance. This may include design, tolerance, production methods, coating, processing, heat treatment, measurement techniques, etc. The person will collaborate with technical resources inside Collins and at the supplier to develop actions and coordinate activities needed to ensure delivery of quality parts occurs per schedule. This will include resolution of risks/obstacles, regardless of origin to ensure manufacturing, supply chain, and delivery schedules are in alignment with customer needs. Communication may involve senior management in multiple organizations.

Tasks may include but are not limited to:

  • Establish partnerships at all levels within the supplier, emphasizing: collaboration, clear expectations, common goals, trust and transparency
  • Responsible for ensuring supply base is capable and prepared to support production rates on all programs.
  • Support the selection, development, and management of Strategic & Preferred Suppliers to meet commodity cost and performance goals.
  • Implement programs for supplier performance management, supplier Lean journeys and supply base optimization.
  • Partner with suppliers to lead continuous improvement, problem solving, waste elimination, and other value-enhancing opportunities.
  • Drive business process improvements between Collins and the suppliers.
  • Work with suppliers to lead improvement of their manufacturing processes to reduce cycle times, improve throughput and quality, and ultimately meet the requirements for the Collins Aerospace Supplier Gold Program.
  • Support Commodity team negotiations.
  • Support the relationship management of Strategic Partners and Preferred suppliers.
  • Work with Commodity Managers and Design/Project Engineers to coordinate sourcing strategies and ensure a smooth and timely manufacturing ramp-up on new programs.
  • Champion value analysis for purchased products and propose/lead design and process improvement projects to reduce costs.
  • Make design and manufacturing recommendations in the new product development process, support concurrent engineering activities between supplier and internal product development teams.
  • Interact with suppliers to review, maintain and revise Manufacturing Process Sheet (MPS’s)
  • Ensure appropriate risk mitigation activities are completed

Basic Qualifications:

  • This position requires a Bachelor's degree in the appropriate discipline and 7 years of relevant experience
  • OR an Advanced degree in the appropriate discipline and 5 years of relevant experience.
  • In the absence of a degree, 11 years of relevant experience is required.
  • Previous experience in a technical capacity (Engineering or Operations)
  • Strong knowledge of GD&T and a proficiency with CAD
  • Experience in manufacturing – Surface Finishing, Machining, Paint and Assembly.
  • Strong supplier & applicable industry knowledge
  • General knowledge of Supply Chain Management practices as well as procurement systems.
  • Strong understanding of Continuous Improvement (CI) with demonstrated success implementing CI projects.
  • Previous experience in Manufacturing/Mechanical/Aerospace components
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings and specifications & drive manufacturability improvements
  • Background six sigma, root cause analysis, PPAP, GR&R
  • Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes
  • Lean management tools with the ability to measure, analyze and assess complex processes
  • 5 years of operations experience in a manufacturing environment including leading project teams.

Travel Requirements

30% (typically in region)

Ideal Candidate Qualifications:

  • University Degree in a Technical Field (Engineering, Operations or, Quality Preferred)
  • Experience in a machining facility with knowledge of programming and tooling
  • Advanced degree
  • Project Management experience
  • Previous experience with aircraft landing gear
