Overview

A Level II pharmacist, Outpatient/Specialty Pharmacy, is responsible for supporting the daily operations of the Outpatient Pharmacy. This includes daily staff oversight, staff orientation/training, inventory management, communication with nursing, providers, coordination of staff work schedules, coordination of daily assignments, and review/follow-up of safety reports in collaboration with the Medication Safety Officer. The pharmacist assists prescribers with prescription questions, prior-authorizations and conducts pharmacy protocol education. This includes Identifying, triaging, and resolving complex insurance related issues.

This job will start at our Longwood campus (450 Brookline Ave) and transition to Methuen, MA as the specialty pharmacy opens Spring of 2020.

Responsibilities

Pharmacists are responsible for the preparation, compounding and dispensing of medications according to the laws and regulations governing pharmacists and the practice of pharmacy. The Pharmacists are responsible for the optimization of drug therapy by identifying, resolving, and preventing drug-related problems and adverse drug events.

  • Appropriately dispenses pharmaceuticals, including sterile products, chemotherapy, biologics, narcotic medications and investigational medications
  • Performs quality checks on prescription orders entered by Pharmacy Technicians; assists Technicians with data entry of prescriptions for complex orders
  • Participates in prior authorization activities with patients’ insurance companies; reviews charts / medical records as needed
  • Consults with patients regarding medication questions / concerns and instructions
  • Reviews and evaluates all physicians’ medication orders for completeness and appropriateness prior to dispensing; consults with physicians and nurses to clarify orders as needed
  • Monitors drug therapy for contraindications, including but not limited to: drug-drug interaction; drug-nutrient interaction; drug-herb interaction; allergies; and the appropriateness of drug and dose
  • Documents and reports clinical interventions in the safety system; detects and reports adverse drug reactions accurately, in a timely manner and per policy
  • Reviews and compares investigational protocols to medication orders for completeness and appropriateness prior to dispensing
  • Performs quality control on medication orders and on prepared medications; performs additional quality control activities including but not limited to refrigerator temperature, clinic stock box and manufacturing logs, code cart, hood cleaning and narcotic accountability records
  • Performs research on best practice for compounding medications; uses available in house resources and conducts own research through other cancer centers as needed
  • Oversees the activities of Pharmacy Technicians and other support staff; orients and precepts students
  • Other duties and projects as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an accredited college of Pharmacy
  • Licensed to practice pharmacy in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts3.
  • Three to five years of outpatient/specialty/retail experience is required
  • Must complete 20 continuing education credits per year to maintain licensure
