Description
In this hands-on technical role, the Director, Innovation and Technology Development will lead the new product development innovation efforts at Mammotome. This role will shape the future Mammotome product portfolio by identifying and developing existing and new technologies that will allow Mammotome products to meet and exceed customer expectations in new and different ways.Essential Functions (Accountabilities/Responsibilities)New Technology Creation & Maturation:
  • Creation or identification of technology that can solve targeted problems in new or known ways;
  • Leverages experience and unique perspective to make the ‘impossible’ possible;
  • Solves problems that others have not been able to solve – in ways others did not expect to work;
  • Inspires new thinking in others that leads to their creation of new technologies;
  • Maturation of technology for integration into new or ongoing R&D projects;
  • Leads technology readiness assessment, concept creation and testing; and,
  • Coordinates development of technology by leveraging internal and external sources.
Technology Assessment:
  • Assessment of new technology created by others (internally or externally developed);
  • Engages with project teams to assess proof-of-concept in support of project execution (including design reviews & technology challenge sessions);
  • Indirectly leads Engineering resources to complete Innovation projects;
  • Indirectly leads small teams, that change often, to deliver on innovation funnel; and,
  • Assists with evaluation of potential new business products and acquisitions.
Innovation Strategy:
  • Responsible for creation of the Innovation Roadmap (3-7 years prior to commercialization);
  • Owns innovation pipeline (strategy creation, technology identification, & assessment);
  • Works with legal team to set IP strategy for technology and innovation; and,
  • Implements and designs appropriate processes for innovation.
Customer & Market Focused:
  • Fosters an environment focused on customer feedback and deep understanding of customer needs;
  • Maintains an understanding of market trends, technology development, and emerging clinical needs;
  • Tracks relevant competitor actions and develops an understanding of underlying competitor strategy; and,
  • Other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
Qualifications
Required Education, Skills and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree (BS) in Mechanical, Electrical or Software Engineering or, other related technical discipline, is required;
  • Minimum of 10 years related work experience;
  • Experience must include New Product Development;
  • Previous demonstrated leadership required (technical leadership or people leadership); and,
  • Strong understanding of Good Engineering Practices – must be able to capably understand how a technology works, its potential application in our industry, its potential application to our products, and be able to convey benefits and downsides.
Desired Education, Skills and Experience
  • Advanced degree in an Engineering field or in Business is strongly preferred;
  • Medical device experience (in a Class 2 or higher regulated environment);
  • Solid understanding of quality management systems and needs for regulatory compliance;
  • Prior experience with a structured innovation process; and,
  • Experience conveying new and intricate designs to both technical team members & non-technical team members with the appropriate level of risk analysis.

  • True love of continuous improvement, measuring results and problem solving;
  • Team player who can work well across a global organization; and,
  • Willingness to learn the complexities of working in a Diagnostic industry where compliance to regulation is a must.
Travel Requirements
  • Up to 10% travel with a mix of domestic and international locations
  • Occasional overnight trips
