About This Position:

United Technologies Research Center (UTRC - East Hartford, CT) has a newly created position of Autonomous Control System Researcher. The person in this role will work in the Control Systems Group, part of UTRC’s Autonomous and Intelligent Systems Department. The Control Systems Group studies, develops, and transitions relevant technologies for dynamic system analysis, control architecture and algorithm design, and verification.

Technologies for enabling autonomous systems such as unmanned air vehicles and service and manufacturing robots are expected to play an increasingly important role across United Technologies Corporation (UTC) business units. Your primary expertise should be in modern systems and control theory and methods and you should have a strong background in the development and implementation of control-theoretic motion planning algorithms for unmanned vehicles or robotic platforms modeled as dynamic systems.

Real time implementation knowledge and experience are important as we consider demonstrations to be an important part of our capability development. The intent is to integrate motion planning algorithms with other technologies including perception and machine learning to enable artificial intelligence in these systems for practical implementation in the business units.

We're looking for someone that has a strong interest and experience in motion planning for either unmanned vehicles or robotic systems as well as a record of technical journal and conference publications documenting implementation and demonstration. Familiarity with autonomous system architectures and related implementations or standards for modularity and interoperability is desired.

The primary responsibility of the Autonomous Control System Researcher will be to conceive, identify, and implement rigorous approaches to integration of motion planning and related algorithms supporting existing and new projects.

Projects can be expected to involve unmanned air vehicles, ground mobile robots, and robotic manipulators for diverse applications ultimately supporting UTC business units Pratt & Whitney (gas turbine engines) and Collins Aerospace (aerospace systems).

Applications include new product capability development as well as product manufacturing, service, and inspection.
