Hancock Natural Resource Group (HNRG) founded in 1985, is a registered investment advisor and wholly owned subsidiary of John Hancock/Manual Life Financial Corporation. HNRG is based in Boston, Massachusetts and is comprised of two core businesses, Hancock Agricultural Investment Group (HAIG), which develops and manages farmland investments and Hancock Timber Resource Group (HTRG), which develops and manages timberland investments. As of September 30, 2018, HAIG managed USD 3.0 Billion of global farmland assets and HTRG managed USD 11.1 Billion in global timberland assets. HNRP is seeking an Associate Director/Director. This is a unique opportunity to play a key role in the company’s continued growth and success and be part of an integral team of investment professionals.

The overall objective of this role is to work with the Head of HNRP and other HAIG/HTRG/HNRG staff focused on the development, implementation and execution of Farmland and Timberland Plus along with other adjacent verticals that may develop over time under HNRP. The role has a primary responsibility to strongly participate/assist in the origination, diligence, underwriting, and closing of investments consistent with Investor and Company objectives. This individual will possess the ability to operate effectively with institutional grade investors and partners, and experience working with or leading teams inside and outside HNRG. The individual and the team will work closely with other groups within the Company. Reporting directly to the Head of HNRP, the successful candidate will be a key member of the HNRP team and will be expected to participate in and contribute to all discussions and decisions relating to HNRP/HNRG’s business activities globally.

A particular challenge for this role will be exploring the investment possibilities for Farmland and Timberland Plus, along with potential other adjacent verticals, within the existing portfolio, while maintaining the integrity of the core business and creating cross over investment opportunities for existing clients. Unlocking the existing platform is a key enabler.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Development, oversight and support of HNRP’s strategy (vision, goals & long term strategic plan); including all facets of acquisition, management, company servicing and disposition capability
  • Participate and assist in development of investment opportunities of interest to HNRG investors and prospective investors
  • Be a key marketing and business development manager for opportunities associated with the HNRP strategy
  • Evaluation of acquisition and disposition opportunities
  • Evaluation of portfolio performance
  • Development and implementation of acquisition funding strategies
  • Negotiating solutions to keep deals moving forward, problem solving to mitigate challenges and general forward push on projects to Ensure strategic priorities are clearly defined and supported with research for each market
  • Developing acquisition structures and/or vehicles necessary to accommodate client objectives
  • Work closely with Client Account Management and Business Development to secure capital funding for identified strategies and to service clients on investments that have closed
  • Conduct thorough technical and financial analysis on both acquisition and disposition opportunities
  • Maintaining investment pipeline data and gathering relevant information from industry sources
  • Due diligence and deal execution including approval through HAIG ICM, NRIC and other processes as required
  • Develop strong relationships with various members of the industry such as other agriculture executives, investment bankers, legal counsels, etc.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Minimum seven years of relevant experience in private equity and/or the investment classes involving the agricultural asset sectors
  • Bachelor’s Degree with a major in business, finance or accounting. MBA, CFA, or CAIA is a plus
  • Solid knowledge of investment management, specifically real assets with experience in agricultural investments with a focus on the agribusiness and/or food sector
  • Broad based credit, mergers & acquisition and/or private equity background
  • Proven ability to simultaneously work on multiple investment-related projects in a time critical, transaction-oriented environment.
  • Demonstrated experience developing/evaluating financial models, analyzing financial statements, understanding various valuation methodologies, and working in a transaction oriented environment
  • Strong command of accounting and finance
  • In-depth knowledge of agriculture issues (e.g. value chains, agriculture trade, sustainable agriculture, agriculture and climate change integration, etc.) and a good network of contacts
  • Knowledge of, and interest in agriculture private equity markets
  • Eagerness to work hard in a team-oriented, performance based environment
  • A self-starter that requires limited oversight in the completion of individual projects
  • Excellent verbal, written communication and presentation skills
  • Proficient in MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint
  • Highest standards of personal and professional ethics and integrity
