Job Description

Business Controller EMERGIA For the EMERGIA Journals Sales group at Elsevier in Amsterdam, we are looking for a proactive and experienced Business Controller. In this role, you will provide business decision support to the EMERGIA segment team, focused on Journals sales. You will coordinate with other RSS Solutions Business Controllers regarding the overall performance of the segment. Furthermore, you will provide support to the Mature Europe segment and RSS more broadly, as required, in coordination with the Finance Manager A&G Journals sales. Your main responsibilities include delivering the financial planning, budgeting, forecasting and effective business analysis, working closely with the VP EMERGIA as well as the regional Account Directors. You will act as a proactive business partner and you are expected to apply finance expertise and strong commercial judgment, driving business performance while maintaining a strong level of internal control. You will effectively manage data and provide analysis and insights to help the business optimize decision making. You will be based in Amsterdam and contribute to EMERGIA management teams and support strategic development plans and resource allocation. In doing so, you will partner closely with the Sales & Revenue Center of Excellence and Solutions BDS teams to ensure Finance support and forecasting is aligned across RSS. Your responsibilities
  • Manage the preparation of the monthly Latest View submissions, quarterly reforecasts, annual budgets and multi-year plans
  • Manage the preparation and review of monthly operational reports including qualitative analysis, bookings, revenues, costs and FTEs
  • Review, analyze and challenge inputs from sales team and coordinate with the Sales & Revenue CoE in the preparation of budget and reforecast submissions
  • Proactively ensure that sales proposals follow the Elsevier business model, with active engagement in all significant new deals and renewals in EMERGIA segment
  • Ensure compliance with all financial control processes
  • Provide insight to support recommendations for improvement or change in RSS BDS processes
  • Provide financial control and business partnering with respect to cost and resource management for the Emerging Market segment
  • Support and contribute to change and bring in own ideas to drive the business
  • Lead in preparation of financial business plans where appropriate
  • Be the primary Finance contact for EMERGIA management teams and actively engage the VP
  • Coordinate with a mix of cultures in this global business, utilize flexibility and interpersonal skills to communicate financial issues and topics to a non-financial audience
  • Manage ad-hoc analysis and reporting requirements effectively and efficiently with the Sales & Revenue CoE
What you should bring
  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in finance or accounting
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in a business partnering, controller or FP&A role
  • Robust knowledge & understanding of financial technical accounting standards and management accounting techniques & processes
  • Strong commercial sense and organizational awareness; thorough understanding of macro-economics
  • Strong verbal and written English communication and presentation skills
  • Excellent computer skills: Excel (advanced level), PowerPoint, Hyperion, Oracle
  • Excellent stakeholder management and ability to contribute to overall business strategy
  • Experience working within a large and complex multinational working environment
  • Strong sense of multicultural awareness and cross-cultural communication
